MY CLK DOESN'T START THE FIRST TIME SOMETIMES...WASSUP?

1749 Views 8 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  brianw430
Sometimes my CLK doesn't start up the first time I turn the key. I have to completely take out the key and retry usually one more time to get the engine started...sometimes two more times...other times like three!! What can this be? I'm hoping it's nothing too serious. My car only has 26K miles and is still young. Maybe the remote signal is weak due to low battery? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

MK, did you ever receive and answer for this problem? Or did you get it resolved? I am having the same problem with my 99 clk430 and just installed two new batteries in the key...so we'll see. I'm hearing it may be in the driver authorization system, but have not read of anyone who knows about this on any of the boards. Or the "chip" in the key may be damaged or loose. I shook mine and there was a small rattle, but haven't ordered another yet.

Let me know what you find!

Thanks!
Got my new key today...

After changing the batteries in my key, I decided to order an extra. It came today and sure enough the "starting" problem occured again. I'm going to stop by the dealership tomorrow and see if they can check the DAS for me. I'll let you know what I find!

Mine also will sometimes, maybe once every few days, turn over once, then stop. If I turn the key off it has not failed to start...yet, I just don't want it to!

I may have found the problem. After searching the net for Mercedes TSB's I came across a Consumerguide.com article spelling out the "trouble spots" for the clk line.

It says: "The starter stops running before the engine is running due to lack of grease on the starter drive gear. (1998)"

Tuesday I'm having some service and Evosport pulleys installed and will have them service the starter also. We'll see what that brings for a remedy!

I hope that is all it is!

Got the car back Tuesday mid-day and he had the started "greased" and no problems thusfar. He had to remove the starter in order to get grease to the trouble spot, but he said it was easy to remove. So I'll let you know if this doesn't completely take care of the problem.

He did not have time to install the underdrive pulleys as he needed to order a special tool. That will be next week hopefully!

MK,

Just a follow-up. It is Friday 6:15 CST and not one "non-start" incident yet: 3.5 days. I believe the starter lube was the answer!

Take care!
