My 1979 manual 240D is almost at its first 100K miles, having no problems.

It is going in the independent shop Monday for a check over.

It has of course had regular oil changes, had idler arm and bushings last year, fuel filter, new glow plugs, etc.

1. should coolant be flushed? It has I think Prestone in it.Should I switch to Xerex G5 (same as MB coolant)?

2. Should the gear box lubricant be changed? The rear wheel crankcase?

3. Power steering fluid-? drain and new fluid?

4. what about switching to a K&N filter?

any suggestions would be welcome. Of course I want to watch costs, but I know maintenance is critical.

Thanks.

actually you are close.Original China blue paint job. It has been a daily driver for the past two years, but before, mostly garaged in Arizona, driven on a Saturday.Owned in the family since 1980 when bought from the dealer as a demo_Obviously it is going to be a keeper. Main wear is the driver's seat-that Arizona heat has turned the seat foam into dust.

So do you have any suggestions for the 100K checkup?

I'd go with Xerex or MB coolant.

Synthetic differential oil wouldn't be a bad idea.

Keep the stock air filter setup. K&N doesn't filter well enough, and it will certainly not turn your 240 into a hot rod.

Wow, 100k, should be many miles left in it then :)
My suggestion would be to push the brake caliper pistons back to bottom a couple of times, prevents them from seizing up. it takes some time yes. but if you want to put some time/work into the car...

thanks for the suggestions. Not going to do the K&N filter, am going to do the synthetic oil.

In a world of Prius and Camry, it is nice to have a quality classic that actually gets decent mileage, is solidly built, and still gets looks after 28 years.
