I finally changed the battery in my 1998 ML 320. It has over 198000 miles on it now. I think I got my moneys worth out of the original battery. It didn't actually ever die I just know it was on borrowed time... I bought the replacement battery from Wal Mart. I couldn't believe they had one for $65.00 with a 2 year full replacement warranty, and 6 year prorated. It is a group 49 with 950 CCA.

rudedude, as I understand, the modern batteries last quite a long time with a caveat - as long as you don't run the battery down even once (by leaving the lights on). I replaced the battery on my 98 ML320 2 years ago. The orginal battery died when I left the lights on and it didn't hold the charge after that.

An amazing feat of longevity indeed Rudedude!

I understand the OEM batteries were made in Spain.

What's their secret and why hasn't someone copied the idea for ALL batteries worldwide?

Rude...did you replace your battery with a similar Dry Cell (Gel Cell) or with a standard battery? I haven't had a problem yet but feel I will in the near future...I think redtop or yellowtop would be the way to go in that case...

Wow! that's unbelievable for any vehicle and any battery. My 98ML is on it's 3rd battery. The batteries were never run down, they just quit unexpectedly.

My 2005 ML 500 OEM battery only lasted 1.5 years, but I had the voltage regulator recall done on my ML. Maybe the high charging voltage cooked the battery and caused it to die earlier.

Though, my former 2001 ML 320 battery lasted only 2 years, too, so I think batteries may not last too long here in the heat of Houston, Texas.. I think the average battery life is about 2-3 years on my wife's and on my vehicles...

A good # of battery problems in more recent MB have been voltage regulator problems from both Valeo and Bosch.. the late '90's battery thru about '01 was made in Spain, then switched to Made in USA, then about late '05 switched back to Spain. Spain has been good, the US batteries were major trouble makers.

On the OE battery, with milk color cases, sulfation caused by faulty regulators generally will show visually at the top of the plates inside the case. Most aftermarket batteries are black case, and you can't sapot sulfation.

The range in battery prices in my area runs from Walmart/Tractor Supply at $65-$70, then like $7-$8 in taxes - then at the top end Roadside Replacement with the new OE battery is $135 (again my area).

I have had issues with other cars with low-retail/high warranty batteries.. a lot of fizzles actually, but have worked out for others... go figure.

HI!!!

OEM Battery longevity report

My 320/98 died yesterday morning when starting the engine.
All dash lights went dim suddenly when I'd turned the key in the ignition and disappeared completely after few seconds.
Voltage checked with key still in the ignition - 4.2 V!!!!
Not a single sign of weakness/coming up failure before, just bussiness as usual.
Im the second owner, battery date of manufacture Oct. 1998
No idea how the battery was treated by previous owner.

Getting new 100Ah was a bit difficult, it is not very popular size and I had to shop around a little.
I have purchased Varta Blue Dynamic 12V/95Ah/800A finally.
Let's hope and pray it will last as long as the OEM unit, will report in 10 years ;)

Where is your new Varta Blue Dynamic made?
In Hong Kong we have Blue Dynamic 12V/100Ah/830A - labeled made in Europe, and also labeled made in Germany which costs US$25 more.

Hi!!

My battery is "made in EU", very big country!!!!.
EU usually means some of the so called new countries like Poland or Slovakia.
BTW OEM batteries for Ford, BMW, Audi etc are made in Poland.

Battery specs depends on market probably

Below various specs for Varta Blue Dynamic , ie G3, G7, G8
Manufacturer Nr Volts Ah EN Spec
595 402 080 3132 12 95 800 G3
595 404 083 3132 12 95 830 G7
595 405 083 3132 12 95 830 G8

Batteries for asian market like HK are different spec, I suppose
So I bet yours must be G7 or G8 type.
Funny thing is, that at the store (big one, with hundreds to choose from) I have noticed Bosch battery with exactly same colour/size etc.
Two differences only:
1. Bosch sticker on Bosch, Varta sticker on Varta
2. Bosch was 10% more expensive, but for sure same manufacturer.

So, welcome to the world of Global Markets ( and global crisis !!)

No wonder european spec is different from asian market like HK, we do have real winter every year.
