MP3 Audio on DVD

My question relates to the Command audio system with Navigation. I have created a MP3 DVD that holds roughly 40 CDs (encoded at 192K bps). Each CD is in its own folder with the songs in each respective folder. The single CD slot will play the audio but so far it has been unable to read the folder information. By so far I mean I have waited through 3 songs (10 minutes) for the list of folders to appear on screen. After several minutes the LDC between the instruments did display the title of the current song but this did not change as the songs advanced through the disk. I can change tracks with the steering wheel buttons but only within the songs in the first folder. I am inable to select any other folder. Does anyone have any ideas how to remedy this?

By the way, I just picked up my car this past weekend and it is fantastic! I got it from MB of Alexandria (Virginia). I ordered it in October. They were great and I recommend them to anyone in the DC area. Ask for Kody.

Try using a CD not a DVD blank. The single slot will play CD and MP3. My bet is that it can;t read the TOC of the DVD.
This is taken from a MG training manual

COMAND (A40/3)
• The COMAND head unit is installed as part of the Entertainment Package
option
• Audio CD and MP3-capable (Not DVD-capable!)
• Aux input socket – right side of glove box
• Audio slot may be used for downloading Head Unit update software
I use DVDs-mp3 for about 6 months without any problem...[:)]
You need to press the 'Folder' Button to see the list of folders on the DVD/CD.

By default, the unit will play the tunes of only one folder, and when it reaches the end of the last tune, it will skip to the next folder and start playing the tunes in that one.

The unit will either display a list of folders (that you can scroll through), or it will display 1 song at a time on screen WITHIN a folder (this is kinda disappointing, because who cares if you can see all the folders in one view, I'd rather see all the TUNES and their names inside... very stupid to be able to advance to the next song only by pressing the up/down buttons, when you can't even see what the next song is).

I usually just let it play one song after another anyway...
I have found a couple things about the MP3 function on command.

The software you use to burn the DVD makes a big difference. With el-cheap-o software you can expect to see only a CD error on the LCD. Nero works pretty well with both DVD and CD.

The file structure is kinda strange. It will read every directory on the disk but reads them as a flat structure and only displays directories that contain MP3's. In other words:

pink floyd--|
|---Echos---|
|---cd1
would only display "cd1" when listed. The way around this is to put all the directories on the root of the DVD with full descriptions (i.e. Pink Floyd-Echos-CD1).

I have also had some problems with a couple CD's worth of MP3's on every DVD I burn. Not sure if it has to do with the naming or if the file is corupt. I will play with it a little more when I get home from a trip I'm on (6 weeks without my car is painful).

Also, Dual Layer DVD works just fine. 8 GB of MP3's on a single disk and I never have to fumble around with CD's. If I buy a new CD I just put it in the changer until that fills up, then I just burn a new DVD and start again (an endless cycle).

firemist350- I am also in the D.C. area (when I'm home) if you need any help with this just p.m. me.

iTunes burns DVDs best. You can also manipulate how you want the songs filed. When you burn from I-Tunes it will place each song under the Album name automatically, however this can also be changed (see below)

When you hit "Folders" on Command it will list the albums by name. When you burn using another burner software, it does not always do this, and sometimes it does not even play. iTunes works best (it is free to download and use).

The way the folders group the songs, can be manipulated by changing the "Album Name" of each song in iTunes to how you want to see it on your command (time consuming - but great way to manage your song/cds within the DVD).

I have 500 songs on my DVD saved as 360KBS MMX MP3s, by ARTIST (so I changed the Album name fields in iTunes to the ARTIST name, and then I added the Album name to the Title fields of the songs.

In Command when an Artist/Folder plays, I can see the name of the song and Album as well.

I burn 360kbps MMX because with the HK Logic 7 System it just sounds better. Less songs fit in the DVD, but worth the sound.

Good luck

I have all my iTunes in AAC format (320kbps). The SLK only plays MP3 not AAC (I am assuming). do you know of a way to burn MP3 from an iTunes library that is all AAC?

Well that is easy because iTunes does it automatically. Under Edit, Preferences hit the Burning tab and select MP3 CD and burn away.

Also if you want to do a MP3 DVD (not CD) there is a workaround. Under Edit, Preferences hit the Importing tab and select bit rate (I would use 320Kbps only). Make a new Playlist named MP3 and copy all the songs you want to convert to it. Highlight all the songs and right click and select Convert to MP3 from the menu. This will create a MP3 copy and leave your native (AAC files) songs intact. After conversion look in the folder of each group (Using Windows Explorer) and you will see a new file with the same name but with a .mp3 extension. Copy these files to your DVD and then go back to the Main Library (Not the MP3 Playlist) and delete the MP3 songs.

I tied that but it will only brun songs encoded in MP3. It does not convert.

That works - Thanks for the tip!

You can convert to MP3. Only the songs you buy from I-Tunes are AAC. So if you have already loaded your music, when you run the I-Tunes. You can also set the IMPORT settings in iTuenes to import as MP3s and you are all set. Trust me I've done it, and it works.
Hi All,

Thanks for your help. My DVD is working fine now. It turns out that when I tried the DVD yesterday the key was on but I had not started the car. I assume the Command processor must be in some power save mode or something. At any rate...I put the DVD in for my drive to work this morning, started the car and it read the folders straight away. No problems at all. I will continue to convert my WMA library to MP3 and burn more DVDs. For me this is a great way to go. I am thinking about removing the CD changer.

For those who are interested I am using dbpoweramp to convert files to MP3. It also handles shn and flac files and a bunch of others. http://www.dbpoweramp.com/dmc.htm

Thats works great! I burned it right from iTunes by creating a "smart play list" with "kind" = "MPEG audio file". This finds all the mp3 for you. I did not know that iTunes knew anything about DVD but it did.

One question, what does the SLK concider a folder? Is this just a standard PC file struture? I don't think iTunes can create a sub fold structure. I would have to do that via XP.
You don't want sub folders. Just folders that contain Tunes. It is a standard PC file structure. Nothing Fancy.
What I found out is that iTunes makes a folder for each "CD" album. Thank for you help. This great because I can hold up to about 44 CDs on one DVD.
Ablum titles display in the Command center along with the song name and the song name is also comes up on the dash display.

Why cool!
I wish the list of all the songs in a folder would be displayed on screen so I could select a specific song. The current software only shows the song that is playing. I have to play through songs to get to a specific one. I'd also perfer that the steering wheel buttons scroll through the preset radio stations rather than scanning for the next station in the band.Hopefully there will be a software update with these enhancements.
The song list would be nice. If I use the steering wheel buttons to advace through the songs it tries to play each one as it advances. This causes a very long and frustrating time to advance.
