If there is oil under the dash on an '81 300D slowly dripping to the floor, would the most likely place for this be the oil pressure gauge fitting, or something else? Is this something that the average Joe could tackle himself or is it time to call the mechanic? Any easy ways to remove the instrument cluster to have a look-see? Many thanks from a new 300D owner!!

Although it is possibly it's a loose fitting @ the oil pressure gage, it may also be a blown out oil pressure gage. This is a common issue. The fix may be to replace that portion of the cluster...Oil pressure, Temp and fuel gage.

Check;

Kent usually has a good used one for sale. Or;

has "New" ones... Very expensive though, $419 last time I looked.[:0]

You may also be able to get it repaired at a speedo shop but not sure about that. [8D]

One other cause could be that the vacuum pump seal/diaphragm has started leaking and is pumping oil into the vacuum system, requiring a vacuum pump rebuild. The ignition switch is also a vacuum switch, so oil could come from there. A third possibility is that the shutoff diaphragm on the back of the injection pump has started leaking (connected through the switch), but then I doubt the engine would shut off with the key.
