With all the talk recently about off roading and ML comparisons, wee need to keep the proper perspective of things, the ML is a mild off the road vehicle or dual purpose if you will, it has excellent hwy manners, the Gwagen is a medium class off the road vehicle and it not going to be as nimble on the hwy as an ML, the Unimog is a severe duty off the road vehicle and a very poor hwy vehicle but will do things with ease that no H1 can do, I have an ML and a 406, actually my 406 is smaller than my ML but weighs twice as much, I like them both but each to his own, all together I say Mercedes makes a complete line for off the road vehicles.

Well put Andrew ... all of the "trucks" made by MB are quite capable off road despite their different niches. I wish I could own all three of the variations, thats all I can say. LOL

That is unreal.

That thing is a goat, not a vehicle.

My ML can't do some of that stuff.

Yeah, you can do all that, just need an snorkle and biffier suspension.
I want an Unimog so bad. Andrew, where did you get yours? Are they available new in the USA?

No, but our Ml's just need a little more equipment, like snorkles and better suspension, and we can do the stuff you see in the Dakar rally pics. Not the unimog, that's a whole different world.[:0]
BTW, I am trying to learn how to weld, and if I can modify a Bilstein shock and get like a coilover adjustable rear suspension, that thing will be high!![;)]

BETO,
If you go to the last link in my first post you will go to the main menu, right below the counter you will see four pictures, the first one on the left with the red truck if you click on it there is a new Unimog (U500) standing next to an old 404 Unimog, former NATO troop carrier.
To give an idea the 404 stands at about 7ft 6, the new U500 has one the biggest windshields in the industry, they are sold thru Freightliner trucks which is part of Mercedes.
Last I checked they were about 70K that is about 50K cheaper than a H1.Last year Mercedes started bringing the Unimogs back to the US. unfortunately only one model.

If you keep on going down you get to Tyson’s truck, that is another 404 (Mercedes makes several models of Unimogs including 6x6) if you click on More of Tyson’s pictures you can see him wading deep water, you can see the water rushing into the cabin, I don’t think that is a sight we want for our pretty ML’s.

If you want one for real off roading, meaning you don’t care if you bang it, scratch it, hit boulders that kind of things the best truck is a 404, there are many being sold from NATO surplus and several importers, a good one can be had for around 10K, not a bad price for a top 4x4.is the only model made with gasoline engines all the rest are diesels.

Other used models are dealt all the time from several dealers, I rebuilt my own 406, (WB 96 inches ML 111 inches, main reason I wanted a 406) I even bought a new cab from Mercedes (what other manufacturer is going to sell you a new cab for a 30 year old truck and every imaginable part), Caution, Unimogs are highly addictive.
You can see mine on my album being restored or for more details my painstaking 2 year restoration, you can click on the magnifying glass for high resolution, to exit click on the upper right EXIT.

Probably none of this is the flavor of the ML crowd meaning nothing but dirty mechanical stuff but this is how it started, with a truck that was pushing snow and spreading salt, that is why the rust.

RE: Pictures from the Dakar 2005

These pictures illustrates the forte of the ML perfectly.
I don’t know how many have given real speed to their ML’s in undulating dirt roads like in the pictures the strong suspension along with independent suspension gives the ML a dimension reminiscent of a dune buggy, to a certain speed it will not bottom out and give a good thrill, certainly very remarkable for a production luxury vehicle.
