In the quest for my elusive (yet profuse) coolant leak, I pulled the battery and switch covering the monovalve and its housing yesterday. Right under it was very wet and I suspect that's where the majority of the leak is.

The housing appeared filthy, as if its been bathed in coolant for a while. The lower hose was also soggy.

So, new hose for sure.

My question is, are the monovalve housings prone to cracking and leaking?

This has come up fairly suddenly. Warm weather is rapidly approaching Georgia and I'm an overheat waiting to happen.

I don't know about cracking, the housing seems to be fairly stout, but as you've seen the hoses (24+ years old) are down deep and in a tight spot (especially for fat handed folks like me). I took the one out of the sedan for a monovalve change and to clean out the presumed gunk (yes, it did)

Ok, investigation is the key.

I've now read a pile of posts concerning leaks at the monovalve.

It seems that the auxiliary water pump can go south as can the seating within the valve housing and the hoses. Now, I reckon I've got to figure out which it is.

I didn't read a single example of a housing going bad. I suppose it could happen, though.

Yea with all the hoses down in there just cinch em down real good, being that they are 24+ years old and "pre-formed" (if that's the term) replacements would likely be a dealer only item (?) I don't know if aftermarket sources would have them, maybe

Antifreeze/coolant and fuel (both diesel and gas) are strange animals, when ya think connections where they flow are tight ya get the teeniest little leak, yea I've had those with all 3 liquids. Just a little cinch more or another turn of the clamp screw . . . . . I feel your pain, BTDT

Here's a pic of another strange animal, have yet to figure out what species :eek but he's pretty cool nonetheless

Overtightening clamps on a plastic connector is not a good idea. When the plastic expands from heat the clamp wont let and it snaps off just like radiator necks.
The housings do crack but not that often aux pumps leak all the time.
Use a pressure tester to check for leaks and replace what is needed.
There is nothing wrong with new rubber hoses after 20 years:smile
