The shocks on my 2008 ML550 are shot. I am replacing them next week but am wondering if anyone has had success getting them replaced under the CPO warranty?
I have a few more months left and it would be nice to not have to fork out $$$ for replacements. And BTW, love this rig as it is a rocket! I pull a boat so that may be why the shocks are out at 70k miles.

I work at a dealer. I have to use dealer OEM parts. when under warranty you have to replace with stock parts.

I have seen a few come thru with bilsteins installed instead of the stk shocks. test driving the vehicle seemed no diff than a stock shock.

the OEM shocks are not made to handle the weight of the vehicle, hence they leak and wear out quick.

They used to be covered. And its going to depend on when you purchased your ML550 For example, my 06 E320 CDI was purchased 2/10, those were covered, however, when I purchased my 08 ML 320 CDI, in 3/12, Shocks and Struts were not longer covered. If its not listed in the CPO warranty then the parts are not covered.

When I was faced with this problem I was told unless liquid is running from the shock that it was not covered under the warranty past 24,000 miles. After 24k the shocks are consumable normal wear items. Studying the fine print of the warranty reinforced this.

Was my belief OE black shocks are the same as aftermarket Bilstein "Comfort"? (also black). Is that not correct?

That belief led me to select Bilstein HD (yellow) replacements. Anyone thinking these ride the same as OE shocks is mistaken. They are not compliant with relatively small cracks and junk on the road at low speeds. Rattley trim emphasizes the irregularities on the road. At 70 MPH they are pretty darn good but mine took 2000 miles to get to that point.

HD Bilsteins installed

thank you all for input on CPO coverage. They weren't covered so I installed HD Bilsteins last week---and I love it! Car drives tighter than when new and these are definitely the shocks to go with if towing.

Where did they get these crap shocks? I had a 06 ML350 and the shocks were performing poorly at 40K miles already.

On belief the black Bilstein is same as OE (original equipment) I selected the yellow Bilstein HD. Because Bilstein is the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacture) the yellows are OEM but not Original Equipment.

Agree the OE shocks were stinkers. Bought my W164 with 45k miles and wheels would go airborne ricocheting out of potholes. Hit something on interstate and whole vehicle went airborne and landed pointing a bit to the right.

Not wildly happy with yellow but at least they are safe.

after rereading this thread, I am gonna say it must all depend on the dealer on what they want to cover. I have done regular shocks and airmatic struts/air bags all under CPO warranty without issues.
