DTC, Stored & Current:

Module 1 'ME' 2 Codes:
P20c / C8
'Rough road detection by comparing wheel speeds - speed dignal control module = implausible re Fault memory of ESP P1999
P20c / B8 - No LF Vehicle Speed Signal

Module 3 'ESP' 2 Codes
C1100 LF Speed Sensor Open Circuit in Wiring
C1101 RF Speed Sensor Open Circuit in Wiring

Module 8 'BAS' 1 Code
C1025-003 - Fault in CAN communication with N47-7 ABS Control Module

Historic codes - cleared:

Module 19 'Telematics'

N1100 No signal RF speed sensor
N1101 No signal LF speed sensor

There was also a Yaw Sensor code that cleared itself - can't recall #.

That's it - if any of this Puzzle makes a Pattern to you I appreciate your input !

Cheers - David in Texas

Thank you for posting the codes.
I prefer codes being posted - that's just me though.

Review this first.

Excellent thread Khomer.
I'm digesting it now.
Maybe I have bad ESP module ?
Or connection needs cleaned.
It's location ?
Thx David

Ok, Khomer some questions:

Are ESP module, ABS control unit & Traction Contol all the same device ?

Or different ? Some said its located in Fuse Box, others showed mounted to ABS pump body ?

Also, if I unplug / clean terminals / verify connection on wheel speed sensor & once replugged, must I drive to check if code is cleared or is key & ignition on enough to check & clear ?

Here is thread i located symptoms a match for mine in post #1 the OP rebuilt his ABS circuit board:

Thx to you & all !

I recall reading somewhere the older MLs had theirs located in the fusebox

Note: I don't think you have an esp module failure issue.

The BW link above also has this older YT video (below) in there.

Some more good reading info - compliments of art_arev and 43sqd

Ok I saw video & read both threads.

Thanks for that input !

I don't have code C1000 - which if ESP was faulty, I would have.
So, ESP is probably ok ?

Seems like my likely faults are:

1 - Dirty connection @ ABS pump
2 - Chaffed wire also at / near ABS wire bundle (as in video)
3 - Dirty connector at ESP unit ?
4 - Faulty ABS Traction Control Circuit board at ABS pump.
(Repair circuit board and / or ABS pump)

Thanks so much to Khomer and everyone !

You may want to check the washer fluid reservoir too for any leaks as any leaking there can be a gremlin for this.

EDIT -

Good idea.
Do I need to pull DS fender liner or does headlamp out give sufficient room to remove, check & clean wire loom and plug ?

As per Art Arevs comment, in post #7 on that thread, I have a c1025-003 ESP CAN communication fault.

But no c1000 is present - so ESP is probably NOT faulty. Correct ?

Does that suggest to clean connection to ESP unit ?

Rather than replace it ?

Nope, just the headlight assembly - 3 bolts (1 at the top, 2 just below the front lens*

Take care when removing the trim piece on the underside of the headlight assembly - be mindful of the outer end tips of this trim piece when removing it. They can easily snap off when rotating it to "uncouple it" from the front 1/4 panel edge.

Correct.
I don't think it needs to be replaced.

Apparently the ESP/BAS unit is aka Traction Control Module & on 2002 + earlier w163 is located in closed portion of Fuse relay box:

I was trying to post the relay fuse box picture from post #4 in that thread.

Also the OPs description of codes in post #3 almost perfectly match mine !
It seems he didn't post his resolution, sadly.

Have you cleared the codes now you have written them down?
Drive the car again and see if the limp mode returns and scan the car again to see which are codes are present.

Yes Matt sure have. All the ones I show in my video & listed in earlier post are stored + CURRENT (except last 2).

I just popped off the relay box cover underhood.
How do the 2 large long harness electrical connectors unplug from the ESP / BAS module ?

I'm not wanting to break 20 year old plastic...

Thanks - David
