As several other people I accidentally broke the tip of the GPS antenna on my '03 ML350. I think I pulled the car-cover down a bit hard and did not realize it was bending the antenna on the top. I called the dealership for replacement and the only way they sell the part to my surprise is the entire unit with wiring and everything included for $350 + labor + tax (would have ended up ~$500). I told the guy that it was ridiculous to pay $500 because a $10 part broke but there was nothing they could do.

I tried to search the forums for a solution but did not find anything specific to my model. So what I did I ordered an MB antenna cap for a different model to see if it is close enough to fit:

Once I got it the cap was a bit wider than the original so I put a bit of Loctite super glue gel (GEL... it does not run down as you turn it upside down but sticks) and it is good as new to me. I will certainly not pay $500 for a cosmetic thing on a 10 years old car.

Here's how it looks like:

Does anyone know if the thing that sticks up, like a probe, is just the Phone antenna. I think the GPS antenna is actually the flat base portion of the antenna. If this is true then it would be possible to just cut off the Phone antenna and seal up the hole somehow.

When unscrewing roof antenna mount make sure to unloosen bolt and separate it from housing. After bolt is separated and pulled out push up on antenna base to dislodge it.

I don’t know which antenna is where but you are correct it is a 2 in one.

The phone is no longer of use. The GPS was last updated in 2005.

So unless you are using the nav for fun the whole antenna is no longer needed. But people just like the look of it I have seen 98-99s with just a rubber plug in the spot.

The tip on my 2003 ML55 broke and I considered the alternatives. Most were too expensive.

Ended up making a cover myself. using a small length of light grey PVC pipe and some silicone sealer.
Find a just larger diameter PVC pipe than the base stub and use super glue to cement to the base. Let dry overnight and then fill with clear silicone. After thoroughly dry, use sharp knife to run over the top to smooth and call it a day.

Think I spent about $5.00 on the project, it looks cool, and , did I mention....CHEAP !!
