Liftgate Latch works and locks but the door will not lift by its self can lift by hand and will stay open but will not close unless by hand, checked all Fuses and OBD2 codes. From looking online i think i need to reset door? or change one of the motors, I dont know how to check for that any help?

I have the very same problem - and actively currently to find a solution. I have started to go through YouTube videos and saw this one (yes, it's a GL, not a ML):
. This mentions a "lift gate module" which I believe exists in the ML as well - but without a different PN and maybe in a different location. Because I have a more critical issue at this stage (engine light with error code), I have not fully investigated but will do - soon :))). If you happen to find the exact PN and location for the ML, please do so.

Same problem happens on mine. Happens pretty often on my car. The first time it happened, it was under warranty so the dealership took care of it - whatever that meant. It's now out of warranty and I take it my my local MB specialist and he just resets it for me.

That sounds like what I need to do, coz I can hear the motor in the strut, saw in other forum people said that the strut might be confused about the height limit preset after someone manually close it..Is the reset a hard reset or has to be go thru a software?

^^^ That. My kids forget and they try to lift the tailgate or if the tailgate senses an obstruction. My friendly local MB specialist is not far from me so I don't know what he's done. However, the last time it happened, I pulled it ajar - say about 20 inches opened and slammed it shut again and then switching the engine off and on again seemed to have reset the sensors. Problem if any, seemed to be random and doesn't repeat itself when I drive in to the shop.

They used the shop computer to reset the door and its been working perfectly ever since. I know what causes the door to break, its when someone moves the door around it loses it position and thats why it needs the reset.

I am dealing with the lift-gate issue myself. Read about hydrolics to one of the struts but could not find any hydrolics or electrics connected to the assumed original struts that I replaced, which now allows the hatch to stay open but the RED button nor the fromt door buttons, nor the remote control fob do anything nor produce clicking or motor noise from the rear hatch. The unlock/lock/pull-closed to secure works fine..My limited knowledge is telling me the contol module. Would a MB scanner be able to tell me or will it be a (replace-part if -no-fix replace next part?? I hate chasing ghosts but I hate spending money for nothing even more.... Thanks people... Either way I will post my resolution to help if I can. B.T.W. Doubtfull but is it possible that a 2008 350ML would have the liftgate buttons without the hardware behind them? I.E. the big red close button on the liftgate?

Jumping into this conversation to see if anyone can help my issue. 2011 ML350 lift gate opens fine but when closing, the motor stops before it pulls it completely closed. Usually hear the motor pulling down as it closes all the way but now to just stops when it hits the weatherstripping. The latch activates but it’s only closed on it’s first catch and the dome lights stay on and the open hatch alarm comes on. I’ve replaced both parts a couple years ago but this seems like more of a setting than faulty motor or latch mechanism.
Would sure appreciate anyone‘s help! Thanks

hi there, I am wondering if you found the solution to your lift gate issue? My 2013 ML350 has suddenly out of the blue started to do this, I make sure gate is shut, I lock the car walk away, the gate pops open…I shut the gate, lock the car, walk away, gate stays shut, I spend the next hours check the tail gate out side, it stays shut…I go to walk the dog, open the front door the tailgate is up?

I didn’t hear back on my question so after watching videos of other people with similar problems, I ordered a new latching mechanism from Amazon and replaced it today. Everything works like it’s supposed to so I’m happy. I think if the pump lifts and lowers the tailgate, everything else is the latching piece. I paid $44.00 on Amazon prime and had it two days later, switched it out myself in about an hour. Hopefully you have the same success.

I had my tailgate start sticking. Wouldn’t open unless you helped it. I keep a bit of silicone spray on the rubber seal and it opens so much easier. It seems to me the rubber gets stuck on the paint work and stops it opening.

My solution was to replace the pump (which looked like it had spent some time in a soak bath. Rusted out and corroded wires). Apparently, there is a problem with outside water getting into the pump's area and once this starts it is just a matter of time and luck as to how long before malfunction.

How hard was it to replace the pump, and did you have to connect new lines? I have the exact same problem, and was somewhat horrified when I discovered the foam housing was completely soaked and the entire pump was covered in corrosion. I found the pump for sale, but I'm apprehensive about connecting the hydraulic lines, which also need replacing. It doesn't look like they are threaded and I have no idea how they would connect/disconnect. I'm fairly handy with a wrench but hydraulics are new to me.
