My 2001 ML320 has developed a problem with the central locking system.
When I use the remote, the driver door does not lock nor unlock.
When I press lock, the other 3 doors lock as does the liftgate.
When I press unlock once, I hear the relay click but nothing happens.
Pressing unlock 2 times will unlock the passenger doors and liftgate.
I can lock and unlock the driver door manually. This arms and disarms the alarm as well.
I have disconnected the negative battery terminal for 30 minutes. This had no affect on the locking system, but now the BAS/ESP liht is on.
I have check the fuses and have swapped all 4 relays for the central locking system.
Can anyone help?
Thanks,
Sundanceman:

for the bas/esp turn the steering wheel from lock to lock and a few times and the light will go out. it sounds like your diver side door lock assembly is faulty. also check your relays, (fuse box under the hood)

Have your battery checked out... BAS/ESP most often relates to a low voltage condition..

2001 if original battery it has out lived its life.. Battery over 3 years is on borrowed time..

Avtuner and Chris,
Thanks for your replies, but the battery is fine and I have already swapped out all 4 relays under the hood. The BAS/ESP light is off now.
When I drive the car, each time I accelearte through 8mph, the automatic locking system activates, by cycling the door lock to lock unlock and the lock. All but the driver door. If I manually depress the driver door lock button, the cycling goes away and the doors just lock.
As mentioned above:
When I use the remote, the driver door does not lock nor unlock.
When I press lock, the other 3 doors lock as does the liftgate. However they cycle though lock, unlock and finally lock.
This had no affect on the locking system. No Cure
Thanks

Don,
Sorry. No solution yet. I am trying to avaoid turning this over to my dealer who will charge $ hundreds to do the same troubleshooting I have done, then $$$$ more for what I hope is a simple fix. I can live with this for a while, but I am hoping a knowledgeable member of the forum can point me in the right direction.
If I get a solution, I will post it.

It's time to take the door apart and have a look. It's either something with the vacuum system aka preumatic system equipment (PSE is a pump and vacuum lines to door locks and other areas) or the door lock assembly itself as previously mentioned by avtuner. I have also read if moisture get around the PSE pump strange things can happen but I seriously doubt that's it since only the one door lock is involved. Good luck.

p.s. What happens if you use the door lock switch on the dashboard?

My 98 ML did some thing quite similar if you locked it with the remote it pulled the door lock down on all the doors except the passenger which would go down up and then down. they replaced all the locks twice because there was a ratcheting issue that caused then to go up and down. They finally narrowed it down to a tail gate actuator motor which did not fully close causing the system to try and relock. The fix was to make the mounting hole for the motor larger, so it could be slid back and (adjusted). The good and bad news they can interrogate the systems memory with the body computer.
Sorry Musicman I think they did away with the PSE
