This should be about the simplest question ever posted in this forums!

I changed the engine air filter this morning but forgot the position the old filter was in. I placed the shallower/narrower end towards the front of the vehicle. Is this correct?

I just changed my air filter and decided that the cutout (less filter, more air space) should be towards the fresh air intake (front of the vehicle) so as to maximize air flow.

I think the reason for the cutout is to compensate for the fact that the air filter housing is thinner towards the front.

So did I do it right? I did not measure the cavity but it would appear the front is actually deeper. Can someone with an ML430 please give a definitive answer to this simple question?

BTW, I used the same rationale as you to install the shallow end towards the fresh air intake but still wish I had noticed the position the old one was in as I hate guessing!
