I just read that Mercedes-Benz are showing the new 400 CDI engine in a SL at the Geneva Autoshow. The engine has 315 hp!! and 730 Nm and it does 0-100 km/h in 5.8 sec!!!
In addition Mercedes-Benz are showing a tri-turbo 320 CDI in the SLK with 286 hp and and 630Nm that does 0-100 km/h in 5.3 sec!!!

These engines will for sure be available in the new generation ML in not to long, and the rumor is that a AMG wersion also is underway.

This is from Mercedes-Benz press kit:

Three turbochargers in the SLK-Class

The SLK 320 CDI tri-turbo is based on the new V6 diesel engine, which achieves new levels of performance thanks to a two-stage supercharging system. It consists of three turbochargers, of which two are located on the outside next to the cylinder banks while the larger third turbocharger is situated between the V of the cylinders. At low engine speeds and loads, air flows through all three turbochargers (i.e., large and small), with the small turbochargers doing most of the work. When engine speed increases and the flow is continuous, the large turbocharger takes over supplying the greatest share of the charge pressure and the smaller turbochargers are turned off by means of a bypass system. At high engine speeds and loads, only the large turbocharger is running. Performance is further heightened as a result of an enlarged intercooler and larger pipe diameters for the charge air and the exhaust.

Sporting a modified tachometer with a red zone extending from 4,500 to 5,000 rpm and the self-confident appearance of the SLK 55 AMG, the vehicle is a proud member of the Mercedes-Benz diesel family. The new engine gives the roadster an impressive boost and allows it to perform prodigious feats: It takes the car but 5.3 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h, and it can travel a distance of 1,000 metres in just 24.4 seconds from a standing start. The top speed is meanwhile electronically limited to 250 km/h. With this kind of performance, the SLK 320 CDI tri-turbo has a unique standing even among thoroughbred sports cars. And fuel economy is just as impressive, since, despite the incredible driving performance, the diesel roadster consumes only 7.5 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres (NEDC overall consumption).

New V8 diesel for the SL-Class

The new drive in the Vision SL 400 CDI also belongs to Mercedes-Benz’ third generation of CDI engines. To create this system, the engineers took the familiar four-litre V8 diesel and enhanced many of its components while also adding state-of-the-art piezo injectors, new turbochargers and an optimised water/charge-air cooling system. Taken together, all of these measures allow the engine to bring forth its power and torque in an even more harmonious fashion. The SL 400 CDI accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds. As such, this diesel sports car justifiably bears the legendary letters “SL.

Two-stage turbos

Sounds like MB is catching up to BMW which announced this concept several months ago. Should be a good system.

I expect the first M-Class diesels by 2006, probably as model year 2007. Similar to when the first M-Class came out in 1998, and more engine choices were offered in the subsequent years. The new OM 629 V8 diesel with 315 hp is expected in September 2006 (in Germany) and will probably also come to the USA, maybe as model year 2008.

Wolfgang -

Can you tell me more about these engines? I am puzzled by the description that the 280 CDI and 320 CDI are both the same 3.0 litre displacement and appear to be the same engine. Are there any "hard" components that are different? Or, is the difference found in the software (electronic engine management system)? Can the 320 CDI be further modified to provide even more power?

An ML 320 CDI in 2006 sounds like just the right time to transition out of my 163 and into the 164[:)]

Rick, both engines uses the same newly developed engine blocks which are pictured here in high res. The 280 CDI engine has not been released yet. Presumably the turbo charging pressure is lower, and maybe also the exhaust catalyst or particle filter volume. Otherwise the difference is in the software, tuning etc. Rumor has it MB is working on a version of this engine with triple turbochargers, like in the SLK 320 CDI just shown in Geneva with 286 hp and 630 Nm - 456 lb-ft.!

That is great news, so long as it has 50 state emissions. I went to my local MB dealer to trade my '95 E300D for a new 2005 E320D. The dealer was almost in tears when he said he could not sell one to a Massachusetts resident. Same thing when I stopped in at the Jeep dealer to look at the new CRD Liberty with the MB Diesel engine.

CURSE YOU MASSACHUSETTS!

It is not very clear what the laws for emmitions are in america. The new the vw treg diesels are clamed to have less emmitons then a v-8 treg but yet here in california the tdi in not availiable[:(] this is also something interesting i found on fuh2.com

The H2 is a polluter. Based on G.M.'s optimistic claim that it gets13 mpg, an H2 will produce 3.4 metric tons of carbon emissions in a typical year, nearly double that of G.M.'s Chevrolet Malibu sedan.

The H2 is a tax loophole. Under Bush's new tax plan, business owners can deduct the entire cost of their $55,000 H2. If you are in the highest tax bracket, that's a tax savings of nearly $20,000! The government rewards you more savings for buying an H2 than you'd get for buying an electric car.
Do you see what i mean Soem of are political leaders are just crazy[?]

Massachusetts adopted the California Emissions standard for new automobiles. It is a backward law that is keeping me from a new diesel fix.

Cummins diesel is now approved for all states, but is in a "truck", not sure of the NA diesel standards if Cummins engine was in a Car or SUV ?
Latest from MBUSA's Paul Halata is that an M-class diesel is coming in 18 months, which would be fall 2006. There's a MB 2.7 liter diesel available in all 50 states for some time now, in the Sprinter van sold by Freightliner and Dodge. Here's a pic [:)]
