I wanted to ask what is the required alternator rating for a 3.2 W163 Mercedes. Interestingly the one I have says 14 V 190 AMPS. Isnt this a too high of an amp rating? What is the required minimum?

I wonder if the euro spec alternator is different? The NA market 320 is I believe 105 amps and the 430 was 150 amps. No idea what the 500, 55, 63 etc are. Unless you got a later model alt that might be even more. Might be that will all the extra junk in newer M's etc.

Regardless of market the ML 320's had either a 115A or 120A alternator (Bosch or Valeo).

Regardless of market all 8 cyls. had a 150A alternator (Bosch)

They must have done an upgrade pretty early on as my manual shows 105 amp. Mine shows march 98 as its date. I thought they did minor changes later 98? Wonder if this was one of the changes?

Oh and my manual also warns not to have too much running which I thought was a bit weird. Good excuse to swap out for the bigger one if mine goes. Bit surprised they didn't go bigger than 150 amp over the years as all the electronics junk usage increased.

So basically for the OP, 190 is more than enough. Might as well put 16 subs, 4amps, 5 screens, 4 fog lights, roof lights, and 47 100watt light bulbs in there.
And make sure there all on at the same time ;)
