I have 5w40 synthetic in my 1999 c280. Since this is very hard to find in the shelves, can I use 5w30 synthetic to top off when it gets low because this
is readily available?

Short term, I'd rather have the wrong oil in an engine vs none at all. Long term, I agree, I wouldn't worry about it, but just plan ahead. I always order one extra quart every oil change and keep that quart in my trunk at all times.

You will have absolutely no problem at all mixing the oils. I like to use Mobil1 0-40w that I buy at Walmart.
