RE: Military G...and how we might be able to acquire these...perhaps.

I believe that the only way any of us are going to obtain the vehicle of our hopes and dreams...a 461 G., is to create a "Nationale Eletronica". We need to form an internet nation, with a president (Harald), defense minister, house of this and that, and then form a small military from the members of this forum. We then could order a bunch of Wolfe configured G's and be more or less happy for the rest of our natural days. Not to mention the fact that there will be a steady parts supply beyond 2025 for these vehicles. To hell with the new "G" vehicles of the ML kind.

In an earlier entry on this very same point, I suggested that perhaps we could actually elect a government and conscript one another into defense department of our electronic nation... "Gelaendewagland". We would need no descrete landmass, just an identy, some postal delivery addresses, a certain sense of intention to defend ourselves, and officials who could place the orders for vehicles and parts. The defense budget would be the only budget - and, it would be totally voluntary. We would, however, want to be very careful not to ever actually develop a less than salutary relationship with everyone, since war would be out of the question.

Sorry for the obvious tongue in cheek nature of this posting. I am just very tired of seeing all those be-chromed suppository looking SUV running around...mostly on the highways. What we need is more anglularity in this world!

I want one, just like the picture. How long will they be in service? They will probobally be trashed and be 24V systems. Are all 461's 24V systems?

you don't like the "eggs"?[:D] if i were to guess, i would say the main reason we are seeing less lines is tooling costs. the auto industry would say it's aerodynamics and minimizing drag to increase fuel economy. the tooling used to stamp the sheet metal and aluminum costs money, the less complex the tooling the cheaper the production costs. not to mention the new software and tooling that needs to be configured for the robots on the production line, etc, etc...
i'd like to have a set of those bead lock wheels from those g's, and a 50 cal turret would help with the d.c. traffic!
i say a bunch of us get together for some night op border crossings and acquire some of those g's. i mean come on, they are canadian, how big of a fight would they give?

Thomas,

Not only that. Current contractual obligations will compel DC to supply brand new military Gs well beyond the end of production of the civilian version in 2006 as noted in the Danish Army homepage which says:

Option for deliverance of up to 1.000 vehicles have been made form 2003 to 2009
Check this out:

Nice one here:

Cheers

a different kind of 25 year aniversary edition...

along with the 25 year aniversary g55k, it would have been so cool if they also sold a 25 year anniversary g270cdi, or 461 chassis in essentially drab green with split rear doors. I think it would be pretty cool on the MB web site to have two completely different but parallel anniversary editions... that would truely give homage to the line.

Just one thing you forgot. We need to somehow brainwash Bill Gates into becoming out one and only tax-paying citizen.[:)]

There were some neat items in that article. First thing that caught my eye was the nearly 9,000 lb curb weight of those things (NOT including the additional modular armor). Holy cats.

My favorite thing though was that the contract requires MB to purchase an equal ammount of goods and services from Canada. Interesting stuff, and a tangled web they weave.

I wonder if any of us will live long enough to see these sold out of service, like the Swiss 404 Unimogs.

FWIW.

In the FMS (Foreign Military Sales) business that is called an "offset". It is a VERY common requirement. Usually the offset must be NEW business or stated differently, the balance of trade must be a delta of that amount and there is usualy a time requirement I've seen offsets range from 50% to 100%. I've heard of higher. Usually the contractor is on the hook for it an will set up a special team to manage it.

Why can't MB manufacture the 461 Civilian G with basic accommodations (a turbodiesel would be nice) in an existing US plant? If these G's are produced in masses, their prices would go down and people who would want one would actually be able to afford one.

I know we've beaten this thing to death, but if MB is still manufacturing these G's for the armies up to the year 2025 and beyond, it makes damn good sense that they should at least continue to offer a civilian model to the public, as GM does with their H1.

Here is a pic of the BRIXMIS/BGS 230 G I just repatriated from Berlin.
Its the green one
Interesting - I used to work for the USMLM (hence my name), the U.S. version of BRIXMIS...I would love to get my hands on one of the USMLM vehicles. I am curious about the green GWagon you got from BRIXMIs..where is the roof hatch? It doesn't look like it has one. While I was assigned in Berlin (1988 - 1991), all of the mission vehicles, U.S. British and French, had roof hatches.

I well remember USMLM. I had 2 stints with BRIXMIS 69-72 when we used a variety of German cars Opel & Mercedes,
The Opels were sent to the UK to have 4wd fitted by Formula Ferguson in Coventry
My 2nd stint was 82-84 and I agree that most BRIX Gs had copulas this one had when it was returned to BGS and civilianised again and had a new roof fitted and such things as the fourth seat reinstalled, internally there are all the hard points for equipment such as night vision etc the eberspacher is still installed but needs some work and the winch and bumper has been removed.
A lot of our kit like roll bar extra rear view mirrors, 90 lt long range tank etc was made in house by REME so it will be reinstalled by an ex REME who now works for Pinzgauer as authentic as I can get.
When its complete I will return for display at the Allied Museum in Berlin where there is to be a special display called Mission Acomplished, you should come over for it.
I am in contact with a couple of French and American Mission ex members who intend to make the trip would be great to see another.
A permanent memorial to Nicholson is proposed at this time.
I have looked more closely at the pics in your galleries, both pics show a US G with sliding sun roof.
This pic taken from the BRIX web site clearly shows the copula.

Jesus. some history that I am able to get is as follows.
1984 230 G 4spd carburetor engine produced in BGS Configuration, 4 single seats, eberspacher engine & cab heater, uprated suspension to 2.8 tons, wepons and ammo lockers. comms & night vis positions issued by the West Berlin Government " who paid for all mission vehicles" to BRIXMIS in 1986 converted to BRIXMIS use on Air surveilance. 1989 withdrawn and returned to BGS and refitted in BGS cofig, disposed in 1991 to a Mercedes Dealer in Berlin who supplied a 290 461. and a collector of cold war memorobilia, who kept it on display in a show room for a number of years, on his death relegated to a corner of the workshops for the last 10 years by his son who has no intererst in history.
Total taco Ks 38000.
