Has anyone upgraded their 1999-2002 Mercedes S-class headlights to the newer 2003+ clear projector style with lights from EBay? I'm considering doing this but would like to know if anyone has a particular brand they recommend and if there have been reliability or quality issues? The headlights are now in the $250 range and I'd like to upgrade but not if the quality is crap. I'd hate to pay for an install and then have to remove them due to poor quality.

Thanks!

That's where I got mine from. These were initially tested on my post-facelift 2003 S430 (originally came w/ halogens). Worked well, fit well. They are now on my best friend's pre-facelift 2000 S500, which came stock with HID's. In both cases, they fit well.

So I've done a lot of digging around on the web and I see that most people think aftermarket headlights, including DEPO brand, are junk, and nowhere near as good as stock. Anyone have any thoughts?
As a matter of fact, I do! :)

Just did an install of them this week. The Depos that I bought use HID projector low-beams with clear lenses, i. e. the "post-facelift" look. These work, as mentioned above, on both pre-facelift and post-facelift W220's. They come with the pre-facelift 4-pin connector (the rounded square-ish one). If you're installing them in a car that came with factory halogens, you simply don't hook up this 4-pin connector. If you're hooking them up to a pre-facelift HID car, then you do.

Note that this particular configuration uses single-beam HID projectors, not the "bi-xenon" ones with the moveable shield. This being a W220 with separate high beams, that didn't bother me.

The package I ordered came with the HID bulbs and the ballasts, as well as all other bulbs. Since I had originally intended to try them on the factory-halogen 2003 S430, Unique Style Racing included whatever electronics to get rid of any flashing or dash problems. This proved to be the case in practice, and I indeed got no error messages or that ridiculous flashing.

They're pretty easy to align with a 13mm socket, both left-right and up-down. No surprises here.

The low-beam projectors appear to be Bosch E46 clones with clear lenses. I did notice a difference in "hot spot" location between left and right low-beams, though. The left low-beam shows the hot-spot just below the shield's cutoff line. While not quite FX-R level, it gives what I consider "good" brightness at night. However, the right low-beam looks like the hot-spot's just a hair above the cutoff line, so it's not quite as bright as I'd like. That said, the performance is certainly acceptable. I took the car for a late night (11:00pm) drive on the Interstate where there aren't any streetlights, to give it a test, and I could see just fine.

The high beams are exactly as you'd expect. They are halogens in traditional reflectors, just like the MB factory ones, and they appear to be aimed correctly.

Foglights, same as the high beams. Halogen, they work, etc.

The amber turn signals are different from MB, in that they are of the single-filament variety. This means that, unlike the factory ones, they don't turn on dim when you turn on the headlights; they stay off. Not sure if that's legal in Germany because of the parking light requirement at night over there, but here in the USA, that's perfectly fine. The turn signals *do* turn on just fine when you hit your turn signal or the hazard lights, as you would expect.

Those little tiny bulbs right next to the high-beams also came on just fine. They're about as bright as the factory ones, which is to say, not very.

I generally don't trust stuff made in Red China, due to too many bad experiences in quality. However, the Taiwanese seem to have their act together. The headlight assemblies do feel solid and seem to function well. Compared to OEM or Genuine Mercedes, the price is pretty good, too. I don't mind paying for quality aftermarket...as long as it *is* quality. Initial impressions are good. We'll see how long the ballast lasts before requiring replacement.

Apparently there are different Depo headlights out there. My client is working on a serious retrofit build, and we are looking for a set of clear lens headlights with an OEM fitment. I have had plenty of luck with Depo in the past, so we purchased a set off ebay (see link below).

Depo Mercedes Benz s Class W220 S430 S500 2000 02 Facelift Projector Headlights | eBay

We are currently in the process of sending them back since they don't fit at all. FYI their part number does not cross reference with the official Depo website in Taiwan. Apparently there are replicas of Depo out there with the Depo logo.

Someone on here mentioned this website:
Illuminate Your Presence :: Unique Style Racings

I called them, and they would not disclose the part number, and when I gave them the part number from the ebay auction they wouldn't even tell me if it's the same item.

I've come across another site:
2000 Mercedes S Class Custom Headlights at CARiD.com

I have worked with most of those brands, but the quality has never been there. At this point we are running out of options, and we may still pull the trigger on one of these.

There has to be someone out there with aftermarket W220 headlights.

Our last option is to deline the fluted headlight lenses, but it's something I really don't want to do.

Thanks

DEPO projectors are a good replacement - although I've used them 4 times as replacements, think that one time it was a knockoff that had poor quality.

Look for DOT and SAE ratings, and good ebay marks on the seller.

Thanks for the quick response. I have never had issues with Depo before, but this time it looked awful. From the research, there are apparently different version Depo headlights primarily manual versus motorized aiming adjustment. From the link that you added, it appears as if the Depo headlights that fit well all came with the motorized adjustability.

The next purchase will be a set of Depo headlights that come with the motor. Will keep you all posted, because I don't want you all to make the same mistake by purchasing a set of $550 dollar headlights that don't fit.

Thanks

Thanks for all the advice. I think I'm going to stick with my original headlights for now. I don't want to take a chance with hit or miss parts. My MB dealer has a kit to repair my right side headlight (the wiring had all crumbled which meant the fog lamp doesn't work) which I've asked him to use to fix the light. The kit itself is only $40 but the headlamp has to come out for the repair, so you're looking at 1 hour labor. I'd originally thought I'd pay the dealer to replace both lamps with the newer ones but it sounds like too much hassle.

Also, my service manager didn't sound too keen on replacing the headlights with after market ones. When I told him they were in the $300 range he laughed and didn't think much of them. He asked around the other service managers and no-one had done an after-market install so they couldn't comment on reliability issues.

Sounds like a mini project. Get the $40 kit, and put a few hours to the side and get it done. This forum seems to have plenty of resources and people to help you.

If it's a matter of bringing the passenger side fog-light back to life, I would not recommend that you purchase two new headlights and have them installed; even if they may look more up-to-date.

The reason why I am on the hunt for a set of clear lens headlights with close to OEM fitment is to improve the light output. We are hoping to upgrade the light output from the factory HIDs to about 3 to 4 times the intensity.

On Tuesday, I will pull the trigger on the Depo headlights from https://www.uniquestyleracings.com . This site has been recommended by others, and on the phone they claim to sell authentic Depo headlights. Apparently there are two version, i.e., manual or automatic height adjustment, in which I will purchase the latter. Will keep this forum in the loop so that others don't make the same mistake.

Bringing the thread back to life.

So we purchased some D-Spec headlights after a failed attempt with Depo, where the spacing where just too noticeable. Though the D-spec headlights fit much better, it's not close to OEM. I would give it an 8 out of 10 as far as fitment.

These pics are linked to my company server...will keep them there for a short time...so if someone could post them to a more permanent server it would be appreciated.
