Another possible cause that I can think of is your chain tensioner.
I came upon similar situation in a W201 with a M102 2.3-16V.
The internal spring (ITEM 47) in the tensioner housing is broken...creating strange sound and uneven shaking.
You might check that spring as well. Good luck.
