Here are some photos and notes in response to a fellow Benzworlder's Request.

There are three points of connection between the Winch and the truck - the right and left winch brackets, as well as the PTO coupling.

Having the correct mounting brackets is the critical first step - once you have those, it is just a matter of hanging the winch on them and connecting the PTO shaft.

An Engine hoist works fine for getting the winch in position.

OK, the brackets - The Driver's side bracket (LHD) has a pin or spud that points forward, parallel with the frame rails, as well as an eye to the rear of that. The Passenger side has just an eye. Two identical pins secure the winch to these brackets through the eyes.

The brackets themselves look to come in three versions : there are two versions that are either forged or cast, and a third version that is welded up from plate and machined pieces.

They will all work, as long as they are correct for the 406/416 series.

The MB type A winch is, in terms of mounts, the same as the Type C winch, so if you see type C winches in the photos, just consider them as being the same. In fact, if you were to come across a Werner Winch, hydraulic or PTO, it should mount to the same mounts without any modification.

Here are some photos. I'll start with the Cast/Forged mounts, and then onto the plate mounts.

The Cast/Forged mounts can be one piece per side, or they can be a version that has a bolt-on spud for the driver's side, which attaches to a frame bracket, converting it into a Winch mount.

These are the mounts with the separate 'spud' piece.

More of the same, but photos 1,2,3 & 5 show the upright brackets which bolt to the frame rails. These brackets are multi-purpose, and they become winch mounts with the addition of the bolt-on spud. It is shown in place in photo 1.

The diagram shows two types of mounts - the Cast/Forged mounts (circled), and the plate/welded type to the left.

The plate type. The Driver's side is a series of plate pieces, welded up with a Spud and an eye. The Passenger side looks to have a Cast or Forged piece that is welded to a plate that wraps the top of the bumper, or it can be an eye, welded to a plate construction. Some shots and diagrams show these in place on 404's and 411's, and while those specific mounts are not intended for the 406/416 series, they do illustrate the design of the mounts.
