MERCEDES GIVE TECHNICAL BOSS MIKE ELLIOTT AN ULTIMATUM

Mercedes give technical boss Mike Elliott an ultimatum

Mercedes, according to various reports, have given their Technical Director, Mike Elliott, an ultimatum to sort out the W14 after the team’s disappointing start to the season in Bahrain.

Mercedes seem to have produced another lemon of a car for Lewis Hamilton and George Russell to drive in the 2023 Formula 1 season as they kept the same concept of their woeful 2022 car the W13 with the new one.

As it was obvious for the whole world to see, Mercedes’ decision on their W14’s design philosophy turned out to be a very wrong one, as despite eradicating “porpoising” that plagued them last year with the W13, the new for 2023 Black Arrow is a painfully slow one.

Mercedes where 0.6s off the benchmark pace of Red Bull after qualifying in Bahrain, while in the race their deficit grew up to 1s per lap, both figures offering an ominous sign of the team’s 2023 prospects.

As a result, Russell qualified sixth fastest, while Hamilton was seventh, the race ending with Hamilton fifth while Russell was dropping to seventh.

The mood in Mercedes does not seem to be healthy at the moment, with Hamilton obviously not happy with the direction the team has taken, claiming they did not listen to his feedback and insisting the one responsible for that being held accountable.

Enter Technical Director, Mike Elliott, as a report in the Daily Mail, claims that an “emergency meeting” was held at Mercedes headquarters in Brackley where the problems have been discussed in depth, and as a result, Elliott was given an ultimatum to turn things around with the W14.

Elliott, who had previous stints at McLaren and Renault, replaced the team’s previous Technical Director James Allison, the latter promoted to become Chief Technical Officer back in 2021.

But now it seems that Allison will be returning to a more hands-on role according to Italian media, as it seems the team is putting their faith in the experienced hands of Allison who was holding the top job in the Mercedes technical department since 2017.

Maybe they should offer the chief engineer more money. :) … He‘s one of the most important people in a F1 team. Today more than ever, F1 is at least as much an engineers‘ championship as it is a drivers‘ championship … and a chief engineer‘s salary that is ~200 times lower than the driver‘s salary represents an extremely disproportionate view on the value of the talents that are involved in this team sport.

Take Andy Cowell, for instance … the design engineer whose talent made Mercedes unbeatable for five F1 seasons in a row (from 2014 through 2019). Whoever wanted to win the F1 drivers‘ championship in those years only needed to be in the Mercedes team and a tenth of a second quicker than his team mate. Now ask people (who watched those F1 seasons) who Andy Cowell is … and don‘t be surprised if they ask back: “Andy who?“. … LOL

OK, let‘s see what he can do.

Apropos ‘salaries in F1‘ … a few weeks ago a young man (F1 fan) in a pub in my hometown was complaining about the high salaries of politicians in Germany. I asked him how much Max Verstappen‘s salary will be in 2023. He said: “About 55 million Euro“. I typed a little on my smartphone and said: “That‘s about 160 times the salary of the Federal Chancellor of Germany, an industrial nation with 83+ million inhabitants“. I asked him how many F1 races there will be in 2023. He said: “23“. I typed a little more and said: “This means that the Federal Chancellor of Germany needs to be in office for seven years in order to earn as much as Max Verstappen earns in one race this season, no matter whether he finishes it or not“. … He didn‘t say anything, but I could literally see him think. … LOL

On the plus side, the average age of Bundestag members is 44 years old or so.

Plus … none of them moved to Monaco in order to avoid income tax. They all pay their income tax in Germany.

Assuming that Max Verstappen pays ‘practically‘ no income tax in Monaco, his net income in 2023 is more than 250 times as high as the net income of Germany‘s Chancellor, who has to be ~12 years in office in order to earn as much as Max Verstappen earns with a ‘non-performance-related‘ participation in one F1 race this season !

No wonder Jos Verstappen wanted his boy to go into F1 instead of into politics. … LOL
