I have purchased a 1994 E320 Coupe with only 38,000 miles, and i have the following issue. The passenger side door needs to be slammed a few times until it closes properly. What could be the cause and how do i correct that ? I used to have a 1978 W123 Coupe, and the doors always closed at first try.
Thank You

The rubber door seals are very old on these cars; even older on mine!

I had this recently so I lubricated all the seals at the top, where the windows meet the roof, and the problem went away.

I used a silicon grease that comes in an aerosol. I've used it elsewhere and it seems pretty inert.

Worth a try, I think.

Bonne chance.

I don't know what you mean by 'paste'. I have used silicon lubricant and grease on my sunroof for some years and, touch wood, it still works after a quarter of a million miles.

I got the silicon (grease and lubricant) in a normal hardware store so it's readily available.

open the door and push almost closed gently, does the door line up with the body before the striker latch engages? if you 'palm' the door onto the latch after pushing it almost closed, do you feel any 'up' in the door as the latch tries to engage? is there any 'up/down' on the door if you lift it while its almost closed ?

the longer doors of a 2-door coupe/cabrio are more likely to sag if kid or whatever swings on them when they are open....

otherwise, if it all seems aligned well, I'd go with the rubber seals theory. and yes, that paste lubricant used on tops and such is probably fine on the door seal rubber.

I'd also lubricate the latching mechanism. When we got our 560SEC, the driver's door needed to be slammed. A shot of lubricant made all the difference.
