[?]I'm planning to build a mid-50's Chevrolet pick-up "working street rod" I'd like to use a diesel engine. I'm estimating around 200 HP would be adequate. A Mercedes TD engine/transmission seems to be a good candidate.
Questions: Could I achieve my power and torque target with a 5 cylinder or would a 6 cylinder be required?
Will external mod's such as pump/injector, intake/exhaust be effective on these engines? I have some experience with the GM 6.5 TD. I have increased power substantially on that engine.
My idea is to find a rusted/wrecked older Merc and remove all the parts I would need. Is there a good source to locate a donor car? I'm in Indiana but would travel up to 200 miles for the right deal.

200 ponies out of old 5-cylinders?
Good luck, the 300 td is 112 HP and generally not worth messing with it, unless you have several of them to play with.
Than on the other hand my friend is having like 30-years old MB bus. One of those used in the airports with about 20-people capacity.
It is powered with old 240, what is I think has about 80 HP.
Bus might not be rubber burner, but it gets to the places and you can't beat economy and reliability.

If you want an easier potential swap look at some of the GM chassis step vans with the 4cyl cummins and automatic. Should be from around the mid 80's. I think the transmission is a hydramatic vs an allison. The rolling chassis is a C-30
