There was already a lot to see at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit on Thursday. Technology fans should be particularly interested in the ultra-flat rear wing. At Mercedes, not only the shape but also the paintwork of the car has changed. We have the pictures.

The summer break is finally over. The engines of the Formula 1 racing cars were idle for four weeks. It finally got loud again in the pit lane at Spa-Francorchamps on Thursday (25 August). The cars were not allowed on the slopes yet. However, the engines were at least warmed up in the garages of many teams in order to carry out function checks.
Technology fans used to be able to mark the Belgian Grand Prix in bold in their calendars. After the European opener early in the season, this has always been the second biggest upgrade festival of the year. That could be a little different in times of development restrictions and budget caps. Many teams have already fired their powder.
New rear wing for more top speed
The view of the rear wing is always particularly interesting at Spa. On the high-speed roller coaster, low-downforce packages are in demand. The wings are made extremely flat to reduce drag and increase top speeds.
Many teams like Ferrari simply modified their Baku wings. At Haas and Alfa Romeo, parts were cut out of the flap at the top. That's not called low downforce, but rather low budget. Mercedes, on the other hand, has a completely new tail unit in its luggage. The Silver Arrow's endplate has been redesigned to create a double edge at the rear. This should increase efficiency.

New livery at Mercedes
But Mercedes not only presented itself technically changed. Hands were also put on the optics. AMG's in-house sports and racing car department is celebrating its 55th birthday. For the anniversary, the W13 was given a large sticker with the special "55" emblem, plus a classic start number on a white background and the AMG brand logo.
Mercedes emphasizes that it is not a retro look but small accents for the anniversary. A real retro campaign was a bad experience in Hockenheim in 2019. The car was then painted half white and half silver. Back then, they actually wanted to have a big party at the home game. But then everything that could go wrong went wrong in the race.
In Spa-Francorchamps, the motorhome and the engineering truck of the German-British racing team also clearly show from the outside that this is a special racing weekend. Here you can see the current W13 and the legendary "Red Sau" from AMG on large stickers. In the evening, team boss Toto Wolff and his drivers also did a few laps in AMG racers on the track.
