MERC A140 CLASSIC Manual 2002 30K Miles. Garaged from new with a blanket over the engine every night. Yeah i'm sad!

my mechanic has pointed out the anoying intermittent on/off knocking from under dash boad around the HVAC area from what appears to be a broken lever-arm, on the stepper-motor.
Just wondering if there's any info on how repair or replace with pics eat. any pointers would be greatlyapprieciated. T.i.a...

Same thing with my 2001 W168, looks like a huge dismantling process of the dash etc to get anywhere near it?
I've scoured the internet but no walkthroughs, did you have any luck?
As it's the recycling/fresh air flap I'm wondering if there's any access via the engine compartment rather than the dash?

Not a fix exactly but the flap that's getting stuck is visible under the pollen filter - which is under the long black plastic part at the wiper blades housing. I freed it off and at least got it to the point where there's no longer any knocking noise.. as long as I don't press the recycle air button again! Will do for now until I have time or reason to dismantle the dash.
