I just recently got my w124 back on the road (got in an accident) and drove it without a mechanical fan and without a passenger side headlight (headlight was at the house which I was driving to and mechanical fan is a long story) but it seemed so much peppier than normal. Anyone have any experience running their w124 without a mechanical fan? I know newer Mercedes don't run mechanical fans any longer IIRC. And my car was running pretty cool (halfway between the 80 and next line, but it was around 65 degrees). Also since there was no headlight the intake tube going into the air cleaner box was completely exposed (M104 people will know what I'm talking about). Does anyone have any info on a headlight mod where you can leave the intake exposed but still have a headlight/fog light lol? It seems that with the removal of the mechanical fan (less drag on the motor?) with the combo of easier air access to the air cleaner box seemed to give it a little bit of power. Also I am running a bit bigger pully on my motor so that may help too (tighter serpentine belt?). Just thought I'd ask. I know most of you guys just leaver your cars stock but you never know.

You may pick up an extra couple HP. If the cooling system is top notch, it shouldn't make a large difference although at idle you may find it gets warm(er). Driving at speed though should yield no change.

ya that's kinda what I was worried about, sitting in traffic. Like I know there is a mod to make the fans come on earlier in the cooling process would that help to do that mod? Also I wasn't using the AC yesterday. What if I'm using the AC, and it's 95 degrees outside (I live in FL), will it overheat then? Like what do the newer Mercedes have that ours don't that allow them to not run a mechanical fan?

I have removed mechanical fans from cars before to install electric fans. It makes a difference but with a correctly working fan clutch won't be much of a difference. Electric fans are nice if for no other reason that cleaning up the engine compartment and getting more space to work on the front accessories.

ya idk, in my mind I know it can't make that much of a difference, but it just seems so much more throttle responsive.

Is anyone here running without a mechanical fan?

I'm gonna start on my headlight idea I guess on the side.

haha, I want it to look classy yet aggressive, a big ram air would look a little too much *******, even for me haha. I was originally gonna do the air intake/coolant reservoir bottle swap from a deisel turbo to use my fender with the grill but it got messed up in the accident :( so since I have tons of headlights I was just gonna give it a shot. Idk, w/e I guess I just couldn't stop grinning from the peppy acceleration I felt the need to come on here and post up lol
