argh.. my warranty just expired and my tape deck is acting up. i thought my ipod casette adapter was going south but the tape deck is at fault. left channel goes in and out and its really annoying. im gonna have to bite the bullet and spend some money on a good aux input. if i buy an aftermarket head unit, will i be able to use the rest of the bose system? or is there an oem benz unit with just cd changer/tape function with no useless screen?

Have you tired a tape head cleaner???
If you switch to an aftermarket unit the Bose amp will no longer work and the speaker outputs will have to be removed from the Amp and wired to the new unit. If you have a CD changer, that will stop working as well.
If you don't normally use tapes you can always install an FM adapter .....
