Greetings,

This is my very first post. I've decided it's time to grow up, and am done with my 750rwhp superchared 2000 Corvette. I spent $70K on the thing and it's still a Corvette. Breaks loose on the freeway, but still a Corvette - owned by Government Motors.

So I took a look at a CL600 for the first time, and was awestruck by the quality and substance of the car. The first car I looked at was beautiful, but no turbos (2001), too many miles (78K) and overpriced ($28K). I love the deep blue color, the lorinser sport package, the $6,500 wheels, and the sound of that V12 starting up. Here's the photo:

What I want is a 2003-2006 CL600 in a dark color with less than 60K miles, for around $25K, plus an extended warranty. I've seen a few plain jane CL600s out there that are like that, but none that are certified pre-owned.

Here's a 2003 CL600 for $24K with 36K miles: 2003 MERCEDES CL600 CPE- V-12 TWIN TURBO - LOW LOW MILES-PRICED 2 SELL

Plain wheels, no sport package, but a good starting point and a clean carfax.

What should I look out for? I've read suspension can be a problem, and I saw a post where someone complained their (warrantied) suspension repair bill was $12K. Is there a FAQ for first time buyers?

I'm in the SF bay area btw.

Thanks guys, I'll follow your advice and get a warranty and wait for what I want - prices are not going up these days. I want blue - seems to have been a special order option.

I saw one I want and newer, but a bit high and from a rust city - Chicago.

I will want 20's on mine. That, a slight lowering, and a boost upgrade is as far from stock as I'll let it go.

In the time I was looking, I spun out and crashed my Corvette which I was going to sell, so that's delayed my plans. Selling probably would've taken some time in this market anyway.

Something else that doesn't rush me, I did some research, and found edmunds.com has a True Cost to Own analysis online. The five year cost for a CL600 is $114K, and $137K for a CL65. So in this economy that's cash that's nice to keep on hand or ready for investments as we slowly pull out of this Great Recession (hopefully) next year. This year? No way in hell with the auto maker bankruptcies, unemployment trends, rapidly rising foreclosures, and 21% drop in GDP invesments 1Q09.
