The dealer code list posted earlier helps with existing dealers. Dealerships that have gone out of business or have changed ownership are difficult to
track down. The only way to do this is to use an old dealer directory, and search for cars sold by the dealers listed. Watch for window stickers, metal
addressograph plates with dealer numbers, warranty and maintenance books with selling dealer stamps in photos. Sometimes the dealer stamp will have their
MBNA dealer number on it! There was a dealer in Bakersfield, CA., before Sangera, and I am trying to find that one. K.B. McCarthy in Eureka, Ca.,
(gone by 1980) and Nielsen Motor Co. in Redding, Ca., are proving to be challenging. Some cars of that era have "gone for that big lube job up yonder,"
Along with that complication, you have dealers who may not have sold that many cars compared to other dealers, so there are not as many "samples"
out there in the market. It seems that some dealers in the same location changed codes, some did not, as they came and went. Then you must pay
attention to the dates of their existance, so you know which dealer actually sold your car. I found one car that was sold to an MBNA Zone Rep. that appears to have had two window stickers and
two codes. One window sticker and dealer code was for MBNA, the other was for Barrier Motors in Bellevue, WA., all for the same car! I will say it again, MBNA should
have archived all of the dealer codes, who the codes were assigned to, and dates the dealers were in existence. When booklets were taken from cars, and new owners want
information, dealers should be able to provide that information. After all, we are not dealing with disposable cars. I know of cars that have second, third, and fourth
generation owners.
