This has already been done before . . . use the search function to get the full details.

As far as without any modifications, you have to expect that this type of project requires some major surgery. In this case the crossmember in the engine bay is the biggie, followed by electrical mods, driveline, etc, etc.

i have a 1990 mb 300e ...the inline 6 and i want to replace it with the v8 from the 400e .....will this work without any modifications

Be prepared to spend LOTS of money and/or time for the conversion.

If your engine is bad and you want to replace it with an excellent running M103 (same as you have) that bolts right in, contact me. I have one for not much money, complete down to all the electronics, manifolds, air cleaner, everything. It's currently in a rusty car but you can hear it, test it, etc., etc. to your hearts content.
I also have the matching automatic transmission if you want that too.
It's in Chicago.

Kind Regards,

Ron

Less expensive to buy a 400E/E420 unless you want a project and have a lot of time to do it.
End result will still not be as good as the factory built 124 with the V8...

Natty, If you really want to go forward with this I have a 400E I'm parting, willing to cut out what you willing to weld into your 300E. All crossmembers, brackets, etc. Cheap!

I was familiar with that thread but wouldn't really count it as an engine swap. It is a customization shop building a car that doesn't otherwise exist. And he started the project in 2005 and four years later he acknowledges he really isn't done with it yet. There isn't actually any confirmation that he completely finished the project.[/QUOTE]

That would seem in accord with the general consensus of the replies above.
