Well, the S 280 came standard with a 5-speed manual, heating only climate system (no A/C) and no radio or sound system.

Like the S 320 in Germany and some other markets it also lacked power seats at the front and it came fitted with cloth upholstery.

Although, the S 320 German manual covers all issues mentioned before, hence is useful for an S 280 owner.

Whoaaaa! An S-Class without: A/C, radio, power seats, and leather... I never would have thought. I think this goes along with the whole brand image in different countries, in the USA it's very upscale, best of the best, etc... whereas in Europe they've got a lot of other, smaller and less expensive models, so this is probably why i'm surprised.

The S-class is still considered top of the line on European and most markets where the S 280 was offered. The only difference is that most European markets do not actually need A/C in the summer and things such as power seats, leather upholstery and Bose sound systems are considered superfluous gadgets by their standards.

Personally, I think they are just cheap because an S-class without those things is just not an S-class. Although, the difference between a well optioned S-class and a bare bones one is usually between 20 to 30 grand (U.S. Dollars). That price difference meant a lot for many owners in their decision to acquire the car.

If you go crazy with the options lists (with things like rear fridge and rear rear individual electric bucket seats) the options amount can go well over 40 grand!!!

From the pic posted by ppp111:

Interesting things beside the manual heat controls:

- NO airbags anywhere (not even for the driver). Airbags were optional for the driver up to late 1992 and for the front passenger up to mid 1993.

- No electric seats.

- No central armrest with extra compartment.

- Yes, the upholstery is optional velour.

Look at another S 280 pic (again, no power seats, no airbags, manual transmission -notice the clutch pedal- and this one comes with standard black cloth seats):

This one, though its an 300SE, has the manual LARGE shifter, and a clutch pedal;

Also notice, as these do not have passenger airbag, the glove compartment separates
much further up at the top, giving much larger space.
