Ill post a picture, words cannot articulate what occurred
the best sentence I can use is that the Cam cover cracked and shattered on the driver's side.
it still runs on 4 cylinders, but im past that point in my life
my civic is good, my f150 is good, my 300ce is good.
time to get rid of the 400e and 400sel

The PC term for what you are describing is "cylinder deactivation" :wink

Not that any W140 was designed with that feature in mind, but was and still is a trend setter and innovator. That's why it took 2 full S class generations (the current W222 S class) to finally have a worthy successor.

The W220 was a rust prone shitbox, like the W210 only more complicated

The W221 was shitbox with lots of electrical headaches.

That kind of damage can only be caused by missing or bad cam chain guards.

The guards provide protection for excess slack that cannot be compensated for by the tensioner.

This is should be textbook justification why engines with internal plastic components needs to be regular checked and/or replaced.

For some time now.....all I can see on this site is "Attached Thumbnails"....with no pics.

Is this some kinda setting feature that's turned off for me or what?

I knew M-B engaged in some pretty reckless cost-cutting during that era. I didn't realize corrosion control was part of it.
For sure the W210 was a corrosion nightmare. I don't know enough about how they rust proofed the metal but I do know that the water borne paint is more brittle than anything I have seen. One minor hit from a small stone and the paint is gone and rust begins. I have yet to see a stock W210 get a chip and be able to see the primer - its like the primer and paint are one piece and they either stay on or come off together. Its too bad because the W210 (while no W124 by any stretch) isn't that bad of a car if you can keep it from rusting out from under you.
