In the last couple of weeks I've been getting an occasional malfunction warning - "Reduce oil level"

It's only happened in the freeway after on hour or so at ~115km/h cruise, and it goes away after 15 - 30 seconds. It may recur another 20 km later or it may be another 200km - or not at all.

Since it's very hard to replicate I can't show it to the mechanic

Should I be worried? Or ask the mech to reduce the oil level?

Oil level too high can cause damage to catalytic converters. With engine hot park on level surface for 15 minutes and read oil level with instrument cluster.

More accurate method is to use scanner and look at live data in ME.

I just did a long highway run and had the same message flash. It never happened before. No recent oil change. Went away and never came back. I would also like to know why.
Most likely oil volume expansion from heat on a long drive.

This is more likely to happen if you have someone do your oil change as they're in a rush to do the job. The old oil doesn't have the chance to drain down from the engine completely. Also, they use a "dial" in dispenser so the correct amount might might be slightly off.

My 2007 SL550 I did an oil change and added exactly what the owner manual says, I think it was 8 1/2 or 9 Quarts. Dipstick measurement showed perfect fill. The dash notified me oil was low, please add a quart. So I did. I guess it's happy now.
