I finally got my speedo up to 160 MPH.

And it wasn't going downhill with a tail wind, either.

Read it and weep.

Finally fixed the odo, eh?
No. Not exactly.
I need the gears, yet.
But I've taken the whole cluster apart to clean it while I wait.

The magazines say my new car will do 193 mph.
I'll take their word for that.
Pussy.
You just need a few beers in ya to get up the nerve.

I bought my SL in Toronto in 1989. On way back home, late at night on highway that was clear of traffic, I gave it a little burst just to see how fast it could go. I got to about 110mph, but car did not seem safe at that speed. Quickly cut back to speed limit and haven't been much over 80 since.

Have you rebuilt the suspension? There was a HUGE difference in mine, and it feels as safe (or safer) at 95+ as it does at 65.

Not that I would know from personal experience, because I would never knowingly violate the law by speeding. But that's what they say.

It's paid for and awaiting transport in KC. I'm hoping it will get picked up this week and delivered before mid month.
Meantime, maybe you could go over and give it some exercise, see if the top speed claim is true. It's got stealth radar detector and laser jammer gear, so you won't need professional courtesy from the troopers.

Damn. Sitting in my home town. She is cold and lonely there. If the roads were clear up there I would be glad to try it out for you.

So near and yet so far.

I was meeting a friend of mine on the 400 northbound (I was coming from Toronto, he from Orillia) up near Midland to carry on to his place up north on GBay, we were speaking on the phone trying to hook up on the highway together; when he finally hit the highway he was about 45 seconds ahead of me, so once I caught sight of him I put the boot into it to catch up to him, and before I knew it, I was doing 115+MPH! It felt like it took no effort at all... seemed safe to me, although I'm sure the OPP would view it rather differently , anyhow I'm sure this puppy will go a lot faster than that... but first, flex discs, chain/chain guides, subframe mounts front and rear.

I generally keep it at a reasonable speed, and punch it every now and then on the highway... but I would like to push it up there once and see some serious speed... may never have the opportunity...

Summer's just around the corner!

I have had the '86 560 up to the same speed. Did a little over that in my '71 Plymouth GTX that I bought in '83.. Both cars before a full undercarriage inspection. You think I would have learned something over the last 27 years but nope there is still my inner child that needs to be fed once in awhile.

When I was growing up (still am), we used to call riding/driving at over 100mph "Doing the Ton". My bike wouldn't go that fast, but did it first on a friends bike - BSA 500 and later in company's new truck on a long downhill!

140+mph riding the YZF on I89 south in VT. Scary. Boot it up to 100, 110mph regularly with no probs, but at about 130 or so it starts shuddering a bit, which is unnerving.

About 15 years ago I was a passenger in a Porsche driven by a race car driver friend of mine that got up to about 155 mph on a public highway. That car was trying to fly. The front end wanted to lift up. I was really surprised my clothes were dry when I got out (he had to slow down because a car was on the highway ahead of us)

I've gotten my car up to an indicated 105mph and it still had more to give. The issue with the six cylinder was I had it spinning at 5500rpm, you can tell the motor was really giving all it had. I bet the car is good for around 115-120mph but after that you risk destroying something.

My car feels more stable at 90mph than 60mph because that is when the aerodynamics start kicking in, in 40mph crosswinds doing 85-90mph I couldn't feel anything.
