I would like to know if it is possible to check the timing chain on a M113 without the locking tool, does the camshaft have any visible marks?

Thank you very much, so the notch should be flush with the cylinder head edge? (The the valve cover seal fits)

Yes. MB sells an alignment tool that locks those notches with the top of the heads when the crank is at 40 deg. The tools locks into the notch on the back side of the cam sprockets. It's available all over amzn, fleabay, Alibaba etc
