I recently acquired an '83 280SL with a dented lower engine oil pan. Incident date unknown. I would like to change it out but am wondering if it can be done with the engine in place. The engine mounts appear to be original so I could do them at the same time if the engine needs to be raised to allow r&r of the pan. Thanks in advance.

I've never done it, but plenty here have suspended the engine with a cross brace off the fenders and dropped the front subframe
Then you've got a clear crack at it
That may be an option. It looks close with the subframe and I can't recall how far back or deep the oil pickup extends into the pan. Looks like it might work if I lift the engine about the same as necessary to change motor mounts. Thanks.

How are the subframe bushings?
I supported the engine under the lower oil pan and lowered the subframe when I replaced engine mounts and subframe mounts (one side at a time). I replaced the lower oil pan gasket whitout raising engine/lowering subframe (as far as I remember).

Many thanks to the responders. Nobby thanks for the pix from Rob's site, I remember seeing it now. The long dipstick guide tube may present the only obstical since the pickup appears to be centered in the pan. I think the tube could be removed if need be. I'll post findings when i get to this part.

Knobby, thanks for refreshing my memory on the pix via Rob's. Looks like I may be able to drop the pan and move it aft enough to clear the subframe crossmember. I think the dipstick guide tube is removable and that the pickup should be out of the way. I'll probably do the motor mounts while there, maybe even the subframe mounts. Thanks again.

I may go that way. Yes it is amazing how much the mounts compress over time. Thank you.
