Anything less than a 2.82 is waste of time. Huge improvements across the board when upgrading from 2.24. The W126 becomes more driveable on top of the performance increase. It is the single best bang for your buck upgrade you can do.

The 2.82 is typically only found in the 81-82 Euro models. AMG offered a number of options including the 2.82, 3.06/7, 3.27 and 3.46. I have 2.82, 3.06 and a 3.46. The 3.46 mated with a manual transmission is by far the most wonderfully insane of the three, the 3.06 is perfectly suited for the coupe and the 2.82 is the ideal compromise for increased performance while maintaining a smooth ride.

Thanks heaps for that info .. I had searched but never really got the answers I needed.
We`re a bit limited here in little ol NZ on terms of donor cars for parts.
Could you give me a pointer or 2 in regards to what cars I could keep an eye out for being dismantled that would have a compatible diff in those ratios ??

Cheers Mike

Mike your car is gen one so you could use a W116 diff or 107 diff as well for more options
The only catch is finding one with provision for the ABS sensor and prepare for a long search if you cant live without an LSD
There are piles of tasty diff ratios in the 6cyl w126s that can be had cheap here in NZ
See how quick you go off the line with a 3.07 out of a 280se LOL
Theres a write up on here about fitting a dakota digital speedo correction unit somewhere as well

Ps the ratio is stamped on the back of the diff head
And Mike do a thread with picks of your car noone else that I know of on here has the same Simmons as you and it will give all the US guys something new to drool over!

Thanks Joe .. I`ll take some decent pictures with a camera instead of a phone and put them up when I get a minute ..
I got accosted by Sean Craig on the weekend (used to be staff photographer for NZV8 / NZ Performance Car / Parkside media) .. he wants to do a photoshoot with a view to having it featured in a UK based AMG mag ..
Also .. mines a single wheeler, not LSD, is this unusual ??
Love to have it LSD though ..

is a 2.82 LSD dif from mercedes for the 500 sec.

worth the trouble of replacing mine 2.42.

can get it for 300$.
IMO not really. i'm not aware of the options available but putting a 3.20 or greater would be MUCH more noticeable. a .40 difference is certainly noticeable but not worth my personal time...yes gas mileage will be a few mpg lower but so what, you car will feel like it has 50 more hp and will cost you maybe $200 a year.
