Took my 2001 SLK230 in for the Service Campaign 20091001 (Camshaft Adjuster Magnet's cable & hardness fix) last week and the dealer told me that both of lower ball joints are bad and need to be replaced ($672.12). I know some of the models with crazy design are required to remove the spring coils/shocks to replace the lower ball joints (hope not on 2001 slk230). I want to DIY and would like to learn from any member who has experience on lower ball joint replacement.

Thanks,

I did both the lower ball joints on my 230. Kind of a hassle but doesn't take too long. You have to remove the wheel, brake caliper, rotor, hub, and dust cover in order to remove the ball joint. The ball joint comes out pretty easy with a pickle fork. Once I was done wasting a couple hours figuring this all out, the other one took me about 30 mins. The ball joints used to be around $40 each on parts.com. I would suggest ordering the steering damper as well and replace it at the same time...it is probably shot too. Also, it might be a good time to repack the wheel bearings. Good Luck!

Thanks Wiley, Just received a pair of Mevotech MK9918 from Rockauto today. Interesting, not similar to the rest of other ball joints, this one comes with a heavy duty plastic/rubber shield covered the rubber boot and extended over entire stem with flat hat (see the 1st item (Replacement) from the link below by autopartswarehouse). I wonder if I have to remove and discard the plastic cover before installing.

The replacement ball joints I bought never had the protective cover. They look like they are just meant to protect the ball joint rubber and tapered shaft. I would discard them.

Thanks Wiley ... after taking a closer look at the ball joint design, it seems (when installed) the plastic cover will be push down to cover the boot for extra protection from dirt/water. I will contact Rockauto tomorrow for clarification.

I will need to replace the ball joint in my 32 this spring. I am curious to hear what they say about the cover.

I will post it to let everyone know.

Update: According to Rockauto, the plastic part is just protection for the boot and needs to be removed and disposed before installation.
