I have had this problem for over a year now and so far nobody has been able to figure that out. With that said, this problem doesn't seem to prevent me from driving, it has never stalled or anything, so it's something I've just been living with. I would like to get it fixed though.

Here is what is going on:

When starting my car from cold, engine usually idles at 1000 RPM and will lower down to 650 which is normal, great. Only very recently has the engine started from cold and the idle didn't go up to 1000 which I thought was strange.

Around 50% of time when I place my car into park, the idle will get stuck at 500 RPM intstead of rising to 650 like it's supposed to. Or sometimes it will go to 650 rpm for a while and then I'll see it drop down to 500. I observed this frequently because with my short drive to work, I'd arrive just as my temp hit 80C, so I'd let it idle and get more fully warmed up before shutting it off. Sometimes it will surge between 500 and 650 RPM. Whenever the idle drops the engine usually begins to run poorly and misfire quite a bit. The rest of the time it will go to 650 RPM rock steady like it should and idles great.

Could one possible cause for this be an improperly installed throttle body? I don't recall this ever being a problem until I had my throttle body messed with a couple times at two different shops. The fact that the car was returned to me idling as high as 1600 RPM when at operating temperature says a lot (turns out the throttle return spring was not re-attached.) I would love to hear any suggestions. I'm dropping it off with my mechanic tomorrow so maybe I can help point him in the right direction with advice from here.

Side note: Engine seems to run best when COLD, as in smooth and no misfires. Only when the engine is at temperature I notice the engine will often have a slight misfire at red lights.

Smells a lot like eco junk wiring in the throttle body.

What is the history on this car re. eco junk???
I've had brand new upper and lower harnesses installed. I believe my throttle body is dated 06/1996. I actually sent it out to be rewired and the company I sent it to said my unit was in perfect operating condition and sent it back to me as is. Before sending it to them I did cut into the black outer part of the wire harness to the throttle body and the wires inside looked pristine; no signs of deterioration.

Might be vacuum leak. Check your emissions hoses and boots. That also includes your valve cover gaskets, oil cap, oil dipstick O ring.

Will either replace the whole dipstick or just the o-ring, I have noticed lately that the dipstick will pop out after I have pushed it back in. My valve cover gaskets are new. I've asked mechanics to look for vacuum leaks until my face turned blue from talking.

When they manipulated the throttle body, did they install a new gasket???

If not, I'd start with that regardless. These gaskets harden and are a prime source for vacuum leaks.

Also, 1996 is still within the eco junk era. 1998 and up is the first full year of zero eco junk across the board.

When I bought my 400e in 2008 it had original wiring and ETA but it ran perfectly.

By 2010 both had baked/been jarred into idle jumping/stalling messes.

How long ago did they check it?

If it really says '96 on it I would still swap it with newer.

I had no peace until I replaced both with '98 or newer parts.

Your motor should be idling at 500 rpm when warmed up. At cold start up it should be up near 1000 and then decrease until the coolant gradually warms up.

I would check for codes that may be present but haven't lit the check engine light. You may find something amiss there. Also check out the throttle cable to see if it's adjusted properly.

My car also idles nice and still when cold and up to coolant temps under 80 C. Beyond 80 C it will start to rumble a bit but still not bad.
