low beam not working

My left side low beam failed last week on my 2001 e220 cdi, showing up as a malfunction on my LED display. The warning has since disappeared showing no malfunction but light still out. I replaced the bulb, no joy. I switched the right and left side bulbs - still no joy, but at least proved bulbs OK. Checked the fuse and replaced with spare just in case. Still no joy. Has anyone encountered a smilar light failure problem?
