Have you lifted the hood while it is running to identify where the noise is coming from?
If you walk around the front and listen closely, (without sticking your fingers or hands around moving parts) you might be able to identify where it is coming from. Is it a whining noise, a hum or thrashing sound?

You need someone knowledgeable of these cars to actually look at the car and identify which part is making the noise. It could be a number of things, but we'd just be guessing. It could be an alternator going bad, a constantly running Airmatic pump, a failing A/C compressor, a failing fan motor bearing or fan bearing - the list goes on. Without a bit better identification of the part, or a more specific location, there isn't much any online forum can do to diagnose the problem.

Sky - you forgot the tensioner and idle pulley.... :) another common noisey item up front.

My main noisey item comes from the passenger seat... sorry honey, but I do still love you though.... :)

i think its the fan bearing or shroud as ive been searching online n thats what seems to be... i dont think its airmatic becoz the car raises and lowers fine also theres just a pushhhh noise after i shut off the car n get out which i think is normal... i dont think its the ac compressor also becoz the noise is there even when ac/heat is off....now i dont know if the alternator going bad can make such a loud fan like noise... same for the pulley and tensioner... so i guess it could be 3 things since the noise comes as soon as u start the car and goes away when u shut off....

fan bearing / shroud
alternator
pulley / tensioner

Dil, the best advice I can offer is to remove the serpentine belt (engine cold), leave the hood up and start it. You'll get an error on the dash but you can ignore that, and you can ruin it for a minute or two without injury. Be sure to get in front of the car so you can be sure the noise is gone.

If the noise is gone, you know it's one of the rotating accessories. Shut it down, then check each of them to be sure they rotate freely and do not have excessive free play in any plane. Put the belt back on and order your parts. (I actually would not drive it if it's the tensioner or idler as those can fail and damage other things in the process.

If the noise is still there, more investigative work is necessary.

Also, please click user cp and edit details to add your vehicle and location to your profile, it's useful information when you're seeking assistance.

Good luck.

Who quoted these prices, a Mer. Dealership? You have a Fan, Rear Main Seal leak, Tranny leak and you need TP sensors, right? That's just under 3900. That must be parts and labor included, with a free "spit shine" of your choice thrown in... Probably just me, but I find it somewhat puzzling that you have a rear main leak and tranny leak around the same time. 155K, 5 years old does not constitute automatic failure mode achieved, but if it has been driven hard and not maintained mechanically then issues do occur. It would appear your fan clutch is frozen hence the reason for replacement. I believe the price on a replacement fan and shroud should be around $650 to $700 plus labor. Do you have any mechanical skills? If so, you can save a lot of money changing the fan out yourself. Transmission and Rear main leak is a little more difficult as you really, really need to know what you're doing. Depending on where the tranny is leaking, it can be fix by a "do-it-yourself". As for the TP sensors, there are various places to pickup the sensors much cheaper, but they have to be installed by tire removal (Discount Tires, etc..) You might want to check out the "Encyclopedia" link up top for TPMS issues.
Hope this helps you and good luck sir.

Yes these prices are by mer. Dealer parts and labour.... I'm not worried abt the tpms sensors I can live with that n change them later when I get new tires.... The fan I've been looking its around 650/700 with motor n it doesn't look so hard ill have a good shop do it for maybe $100 but I've seen on eBay they r selling the fan for 250/300 I think those don't include the motor but I thought it was a one piece .... I told my dealer to fix the tranny leak and rear main seal leak for $1600 and he agreed is that a good price? ... I checked the carfax before I bought the car n it was always taken to dealer with lots of history so I thought it would be a clean car but 2nd owner who had the car for year n few months showed no history.... The fan going at 155k miles is normal I think as many people online said there's went bad in 90s... Also for the rear main seal leaking oil is a common problem n some people had it fixed at 55k miles n others recommend at 75k .... Tranny service I think its due every 30 or 40k miles for the 7 speed transmission used with the pan drop method as I've read... If someone can give me good sites to where to get the fan assembly for good price and have a local shop do it I'm trying to spend like 600 on it parts n labor

I will echo the advice to consult the W220 S-Class Encyclopedia sticky at the top of the W220 forum, especially as to your questions about where to get parts (that's addressed) and also a much less expensive TPMS sensor replacement.

The biggest problem you will have is getting wiper blades that are the right length, and good ones will run you $50 or so anyway. A search on wiper blades will get you more information.

Oh wow, I am so sorry to hear that.. It sounds like maybe it cracked and they tried to seal it with silicone? If that's the case couldn't you find a used tranny in the junk yard for a couple grand? Probably be the cheapest and the labor on the rear main seal shouldn't be anything with swapping a trans.

The only reason Mercedes would recommend replacement would have to mean the actual Case is cracked, not the lower pan. If so, "game over". Case cracking is NOT normal and usually indicates extreme load was applied such as, tranny was removed and dropped at one time in the past. Another possibility might be that someone stuck a bar up against the case in an attempt to reposition the tranny for some reason, but why??? Application of silicon to stop leak indicates "patch work" then sell it as it would only be a temporary fix. I agree that since the tranny is coming out that would be the appropriate time to fix the rear main leak. I would shop around for another tranny perhaps at a "wrecking yard" or it is really going to get expensive.
I'm really sorry that you encountered these problems, but all is not lost. Get it fixed right and you'll probably love the car. Please keep us posted on this issue. Check this link out http://www.mbpartswarehouse.com/par...94962951+1668&y=2006&mk=Mercedes Benz&md=S500.

OK GUYS HERES THE UPDATE....went and saw my car today on the lift the transmission case had cracked on one corner and someone had fixed it using some kind of poxy or jb weld kind of stuff... also the pan was put together using silicon and the dealer said gasket wont fit.... to be honest it looked like they had went over a rock or something which might have cracked the transmission housing... they want 3700 for transmission only... no torgue convertor or anything which is kind of risky and warranty on the trans is only one year unlimited miles and 1300 labor plus ad another 200 for gasket n shop supplies u know....total of 5200.... i went to a local shop they had done some work on my bmw before he can get me a used transmission for 1000 with 104k miles on it and torgue convertor all together and will charge 500 for labor and another 50 if needs any fluid... while also change the rear main seal aswell since it will be right there with 6 months warranty on the tranny..total of 1550.... i can get 1 year warranty with parts n labor for another 300 but he said if the tranny is bad you will know within 6 months... which will be covered but no labor.... so im thinking since my car has 155k miles the 104k tranny is a good option and alot less too fact that it also comes with torque convertor which the old one might have gotten some dirt in it which can damage the new tranny mercedes wants to put in but they wont even cover me....

so what do u guys think ? also i thought 04 n newer mercedes used the 7 speed transmission but i think the 4matic only used the 5 speed... can someone confirm that please...

also i checked out the link above and these fans look like they r universal... i thought the fan and motor was one assembly ... the dealer paper work says... OPEN CIRCUIT IN FAN CONTROL UNIT R&R FAN CONTROL UNIT W/diag 1025.... when i asked him if thats the big fan in the front he said yes... so will my problem of fan always on on high go away by just placing the fan ? or do i need to get the fan with the motor which is alot more...

thanks guys for all ur help
