Nothing meeds to be replaced except the key. Just tell the dealer (yes, the only place you can buy these now) it is a replacement key (not an extra) and the old key will no longer work.

same thing happened to me. You have to go to the dealer and ask them to deactivate the lost key. I believe they will ask you to bring in all the car keys you have.

However this service is a rip off they will charge you 1 hour of labor i believe.

1998 has Smart key.
I think the only correct answer can be given by a dealer. MB keep on changing the key arrangements every couple of years and it variate between models.
ML320 for example all had blade keys. Still 98-2000 models had the programmable, when rest not.

Yes, lost key can be deactivated by the dealer. You do not need to get a new key if you have a second key with the remote control. Deactivation could be free.

Last time I was to stealer was about 3 years ago when I bought ML55 and the seller gave me 1 working key and 2 new keys that needed programming.
Suppose programming a key is 3 minutes prep job and 1 minute the actual job. So for 2 keys on the same car should take 5 minutes.
Stealer charged me 30 minutes for each key bringing total $150 and those bastard stop giving free coffee.
