 Ive had so much confusion with my 240D. Ive changed the glowplugs, but it still has a light white tint of exhaust when it idles, and smells funky. I seem to have quite alot of blow-by, but my engine has plenty of power, actually it seems to have more power/torque than a regular 240D, pickup seems faster and i can peel out pretty easily. Then theres random clacks from the engine while im driving, not while im idling(warm). Sounds like when i start up in the morning how it clacks until it warms up, but doing it while im drivin down the road is weird. I just wish i could figure it out because i love the car but that problem is impossible to figure out.

Start about going it systematically:

1. Do a compression check

2. Check injection pump timing

3. Check valve clearance and adjust to spec if necessary

4. Check the timing chain for wear and excessive stretch (with the valve cover off when checking the valves)

5. The injectors may be worn out - do a diesel purge first to see if the engine quiets down. If you have no record of injectors ever having been replaced, it's time to do so.

6. Does the engine have proper oil pressure? It can read as low as 1.5 bars at idle, but it should peg out at 3 bar at about 1200 RPM.

7. What is the indicated coolant temperature while driving? Should be 85-90 degrees C.

Does the engine use any oil?

There may be some other sources of engine clunk, such as worn piston pins, etc. The No. 1 Source for Mercedes DIY Manuals, Repair Kits w/ Instructions and OE Parts New and Used | MercedesSource.com has a good booklet "Why does my diesel rattle and knock?" This may help you pinpoint the problem.

To answer a few questions, the cooling temp hovers between 80 and 85. Yes it has proper oil pressure,it goes to 3 when cold but then goes to 1.5 then 3 when the throttle is pressed when warm. I just started it and it started right up, the engine temp was a little above the 40 mark, close to cold, sounds nice and smooth but the idle is a little shakey until it warms up. The exhaust smelled like normal diesel but the smell seems to change when the engine is at operating temp.

While the engines running pull the radiator cap<( while it's cold please).
As it warms look for bubble in the coolant,(at the radiator neck).
Try revving the engine while your looking.
Bubbles suggest a head gasket prob. Wondering if the smell is coolant finding it's way to the cylinder.
Others may have better ideas.
I'm pretty "old school".

I Think I Solved The Case Of The Bad Smell

I got to thinking. Maybe the massive amount of oil vapor constantly coming from the crankcase from the blow-by is causing the bad smell, and VOILA. I unplugged the crankcase tube and the exhaust smells like normal diesel being burned, and when i hook it back up, it goes back to smelling horrible. What is the problem here....It even has oily vapor come out when i first start the engine when its COLD... Is there anything i can do to divert the oil vapors or cure them without going broke?

Well when i take the breather tube off, theres a TON of oil vapor blow-by smoke, so when i drive and stop, you can see smoke coming from the hood of the car all around.. How do you stop the smoke, can an oil separator stop the smoke from escaping?

Well, its not that bad, i had it pointing towards the fan, and it came out one corner of the hood, not everywhere, i guess i got carried away.Anyways, my car starts right up cold and has plenty of power so i dont know. Im tired of trying to figure this one out.
