Hi guys, quick question for lorinser exhaust owners.

I was lucky enough to score a bnew lorinser exhaust for my s280 w140 direct from lorinser germany (shipping to hong kong was almost as expensive as the item itself but thats a different story)

anyway, i had it installed. i noticed that the tips 'extend' a little too much. is this normal? i checked some pictures and videos on the internet and most of them have the full lorinser body kit installed. with the kit installed, the tips do not look to extend that much farther from the bumper. am i correct in assuming that the tips only look to extend further on the stock rear bumpers because of its shape? my car is a 1996 eurospec. as compared to the 1995 and below models, i noticed that the 1996 up stock bumper shape is a bit more 'sleek' and not as robust.

any opinions and reactions welcomed. the shop i had them installed suggested to cut the metal portion the tip is connected to by an inch and a half and weld the tip back. think its worth it? or i just leave it as such?

Hey znb666,

First off when you install an exhaust you ALWAYS dry fit it, which means before clamping down, tightening anything down to spec or welding, so that you can see what the fit and finish is to your liking. Even if you didn't perform the install, the exhaust shop should have cleared with you ahead of time or at the time, where the tips should fit and finish past the bumpers.

With that said I would take some pictures, at least two, one from above and one from the side and post so we can actually 'SEE' what you are referring too because what one person considers to extended may not be to another person. I would also suggest posting up a couple of pics of other Lorinser installs so that we can help judge it side by side.

Look forward to seeing your pictures and I'm sure there there will be many eager to help you further.

I think the lorinser tips do stick out a bit more than stock. Mostly to show off the Lorinser name engraved on the top of the tips, imo. The way they suggested to fix it is one way, but it is more work than necessary. I would cut off 1 1/2" from the other end of the exhaust, the part that mates up to the pipes coming from the engine. This will shorten the overall length of the unit, and the mounting hardware used to support the silencer will accommodate this change (the mounting pins are almost 5" long). This way you do not have to worry about cutting off the tips and having them welded back on straight.

Don't cut the tips ,they will rust around the weld in a short time .Like Cambel already mentioned above ,cut the other end of the rear muffler by the amount the tips stick out ,a muffler place that is not lazy will do it by widening the cut section and make it fit over the centre exhaust pipes rear .
I have the same look with the tips sticking out but that is because the rear lorinser muffler I have on came of an SEL long wheel base 140 ,mine is short wheel base .
A muffler place should have all the presses to make the corect fitting with sleeves and all just like new ,make sure they spray paint the section were they cut .
On the day they fitted mine it was more a problem with the muffler place being to busy and didn't have time to fiddle around yet they take the money for the fitting ,lol.

thanks for the feedback and suggestions guys, much appreciated.

the car is being detailed right now, im picking it up on saturday and will take pics and post.

but as far as i can recall, the tip sticks out just as much as merc-s600's does. didnt really bother me to be honest, but when i brought in my car in to have the rims installed, the owner of the shop suggested i cut it a bit to make it more flush to the bumper. there were a couple w140s with the full lorinser kits and the tips didnt seem to stick out as much as mine did.

in any case, i told the guy to leave it as is. the shop that installed my muffler did have me check and approve the position before they worked on it. it seemed as if they couldnt shorten the other end as the box or body of the muffler itself was clearing the cars axle or whatever it was just by an inch or an inch and a half max. didnt look like they cutting the other end would help the position, but i could be wrong as you guys suggested that could be the better fix.

the first shop i brought it to told me that it wouldnt fit at all! imagine that! after having the part shipped from germany to hk, and then bringing it on the plane with me to the phils just to be told i couldnt use it...

anyhows, will update you guys. thanks again.

Hi znb666,

I can relate on bringing in heavy parts on the plane with you, from HK to Manila :wink, did it get the "X" mark so that it would have to be opened for inspection?

hey pare. fortunately, I didn't get that X mark. but I was stopped at customs. didn't have to pay anything though, think the customs officer was too tired to bother. my flight was delayed so got to customs gate around 130am...

I suspect your exhaust is correctly fitted to the car. You mentioned that the tip protrusion appeared to be less on a full dress Lorinzer example. I would think that the modified rear bumper shape is the reason the tips "appeared" to be tucked in.

Good luck with the car and new modifications. I hope the end result meets your expectations.
