Hi, new on here...Looking to do a deal soon on a new R350CDI in 4-matic long wheel base...Any options I should have or avoid? Here in the UK it comes as standard with quite a decent spec; artico, hids(that swivel), daylight running LEDs, etc....Just thinking of upgrading Audio 50 to Comand and getting the upgraded sound system and rear view camera...

Any advice is welcomed...

LOVE the rear view camera!!!
REALLY wish I had the upgraded sound system as, to my ears, the regular one is not very satisfying. I had a listen to the upgraded one and there is no comparison. I wanted to have it but there were none in stock so I would have had to wait until the Spring for a factory ordered car to be delivered.

I would get the Panoramic sunroof as well. Not only MUCH nicer, but I'm sure that without it, the car would be harder to sell later.

Thanks for that...Yes rearview camera, my wife has it on her Murano at the moment which I look to replace with the R and I love it....

The dealer in North London asked me to put it in an awkward place returning from the test drive and it did make it easy, although I didn't quite trust it yet. I noticed myself using the mirrors a lot :)

I've never seen one with a Sunroof...I know my daughters always want it open, and driving through Switserland and Italy it is nice opposed to the climate control...But personally I always close it as I don't like light from above when I am driving. So although it would be my wifes, I might be selfish and tell her it is not available ;)

I love the fact that the passenger side mirror tips down when you put the car in reverse, and then resets itself back to normal as soon as you put it back into a forward gear.

Interesting about the sun roof. Here they are standard; they all have one. The option is whether or not you get the regular sunroof or the Panoramic one that basically goes all the way to the rear of the vehicle

Yes noticed that on the test drive. Something I always loved off my 1995 BMW 7 series ;-) And the auto locking doors.

But I also really like the cornering HIDs, daylight running LED and the cornerlights...We live quite remotely in the country side and that was great...Also the LED adaptive brake lights is a good safety feature I think...

Yes the brake lights are normal when you apply them in a normal way, however when you brake hard they start flickering like a police patrol car :) People behind you definitely see them...

Thanks for the picture of the panoramic sunroof, seeing that it is rather nice. Looks very smart....

Here are some options that I would recommend, have the option on mine...

- OEM Bi-Xenon, look in this forum and you will find people complaining about the stock halogen...
- Rear view camera, the car is one big blind angle when looking back.
- Rear window blinds, very use full in the summer and here in Florida it is a must.
- Key-less GO, nice when the wife has her hands full of groceries and our son, just touch the door handle and the door lock opens, no need to grab for the key...
- 7-Seat configuration, now we can go 5 persons and still have plenty of trunk space.

I also got the Harman Kardon sound system, was included in package II as they are sold here in US. Very nice system, but do not expect a bling bling system :D, just a very nice sound system...

I also had a few other options, which are not that necessary

- Illuminated door steps, only froont on long version.
- iPod interface, I never use it

There was something more but I can't remember now.

Thanks for that...Gosh I nearly forgot the iPod lead...It is a no cost option here in the UK but an option never the less...I appreciate there is a DVD MP3 changer built in...But having my iPhone playlists, and my wife's nano saves me burning disks! Good shout...

Right so keyless go, you can leave it in your pocket and it works on proximity or something like that? Does it open all doors or just the side you are close too? I've had two near car jacks, one in London and one in Barcelone, and I'm now a little bit on edge at times and prefer it where one door opens at a time...

On the Key Less go;

Here in US it works like this, it is selective, but only in 2-3 ways.

If you come to the drivers door it will only unlock the drivers door, if you get to the other doors it will unlock all doors.

If you open the trunk it will not unlock the doors.

It is only working if the key is within 1m from the door you try to open.

That's good I like that!

Keyless Go:
This is one of those features that I thought was for "lazy" people and that I would never want. For 2010 they included it as part of the regular premium package so I ended up with it. Well, I was wrong; I love it! No fumbling for keys, ever, especially handy when your hands are full and its raining, etc. Simply touch any door handle and the car unlocks.

Selective Door unlocking with remote:
On my car it is programmable. You can switch these features on and off via a programming sequence on the remote.

iPod:
I have my old 60 gig ipod permanently mounted in the glovebox (there is an optional inexpensive iPod "holder" that keeps it securely mounted so it doesn't slide around in the glovebox). This is one option I would not be without. You can fully control it from command or control it from the steering wheel. I listen to it most of the time. I especially appreciate being able to listen it through the speakers while the kids are listening to the regular radio through the rear headphone jacks.

Interesting, maybe keyless go is worth it afterall. It is a separate option in the UK...I'd be more interested in the rear headphone sockets. Not something I have seen in the UK models but I would love. The alternative car we've been looking at (and it is between these two) is the Land Rover LR4 in top spec which does have those options...I prefer the way the R350cdi drives and handles...

That's exactly why I went with the R when previously I had been looking at ML's. Actually it all started with thinking that I was going to get a GLK, but in the end I decided that the rear seats in it were just too cramped.

The rear headphone jacks are also part of the Canadian Premium Package.

LOL For us it all started with the Audi Q5 and then I couldn't get the discount I wanted so I walked away. My wife then booked a test drive with the Land Rover LR4 or Discover 4 as we call it in Europe. And so the 7 seat hunt started....Audi Q7, Merc GL, BMW X5, Volvo XC90 all of them the rear seats aren't suitable for an adult really...Now we only have two children, but most of the time (since we live remotely in the country side) we have guests staying over etc...So it is quite useful...

In my opinion on the R and the LR4 have true useable space for adults and some boot space left...

Yes and minivan's don't do it for me, and where we live is on a hill but we always get snow, and there is always flooding in the valley so 4wd is great. I got rid of my 7 series BMW as I couldn't get it up the hill in winter, absolutely useless...

:D, that is how it starts, thr R-Class will grow on you:rolleyes:

We started out with the GL and Q7, but realiced that the R-Class had more useable room in the rear. BTW, I still love the mean looks of the Q7...

Just make sure that you get the options that you think you might want, as installation after will be more expensive...

Thanks for that. Yes I love the looks of the Q7 as well, just a shame that the rear bench is not really useable for anything other than midgets...

I'm thinking of getting it slightly tweaked though by these guys, they've done my truck as well and do amazing high quality modifications...
Mercedes R-Class - Revere London - www.reverelondon.com a bit cosmetic right wheels etc...but also a tailored remap of the engine :)
