I am just starting to look for a 1990's 600 series SL and wanted to know which years to avoid for the wiring issues and other problems that time has exposed. Is there a consus on the best years to look for - and other than the electical issues are they really any more expensive to maintain than a 500 series?

All feedback would be appreciated

A consus? There's no consensus on anything about used Mercedes but the vast majority opinion would be to avoid all years.

I'd be looking for the newest lowest mileage example you can afford. The more repair records the better. 93-96 had the bad wiring 97-99 IRC had the weaker 5 speed tranny. Parts for these cars are much more than you are used to for you other mercedes, I found this out quick. This is one of those cars that you are better off paying more for a better condition car than a cheaper one with work needed because it adds up fast.

X2.
i dont know if you experience the price for the parts on the sl500s... but they are expensive... a 600 is exponentially more though. Mercedes figured, if they can afford a v12, they can pay for parts. Another thing is, the V12s have twice of everything. 2ECUs, 16 sparkplugs, 2 distributors, etc etc etc... so not only are you paying exponentially more for parts, but you have to buy two of them!!!
Also, i heard the earlier years (up until 95ish) there way many fluid leaks for everything... so if the parts price didnt scare you, then make sure you get a later one!
