Hi. This is my first post and am after anything you guys can tell me about an 89 2 lt. 190E . I have a 87 190E 2.6 with 260,000 on it and am more than happy with it. I also have a Hong Kong import 300E W124 with 113,000 ? which was off the road for 8 years when I got it. Both of these cars have enough power to keep me happy. I am looking at getting a 2 liter 89 190E for one of my daughters and am concerned that it will be a bit under powered. Can anyone give me some info or first hand experience with these 4 cylinder 190's. Cheers .

How much power you want for a new driver having fun on a Saturday night?

IMHO, smaller engine W201's are the best fit for a new driver. I drove one before and I can tell you from a "caring parent" perspective, your kid will try to floor the gas pedal but will get enough power to keep him/her safe... That's just me

Being in the US, the only 8V 190Es I've driven are 2.3L. Properly running they're not fast by any means, but they have sufficient power to merge onto the fwy and cruise nicely at 80mph. Manual trans helps out a lot to keep the car in its powerband.

I've no idea how a .3L deficiency affects the M102. I'm guessing noticeably and hopefully not too bad.

Thanks for the replies, but I like the reply I got from an assie forum,
(You can choose between adequate performance or air conditioned comfort at the touch of a button.) We live in Queensland and really need the air con and a bit of power.
The 89 w201 2lt. which I was told was a one owner in good condition was not in good condition at all, motor was seized up from 3 years of storage . I wasted half a day today going to see it.
I've since had a chat to my two daughters and the 19 year old likes the 190e, the 18 year old loves the 300e . I know that they are both reliable cars .
So I have decided to let the girls use them and I am now shopping around for a W124 wagon for myself and my 2 cattle dogs, my wife wont let the dogs get in her lexus. I hope I can find one that doesn't need to much work for a good price.

raed_jan, Your right, Rose has got a bit of a lead foot in the 2.6 now. I made the mistake of telling her if she floors it it will kick down a gear, and now she loves flooring it. Wow dad that feels great. I think you were right with sticking to a lower powered car for a new driver.

Thanks Edi.
Stay safe sir and good luck with your W124 search hoping that you'll get a clean unit.
As I wish your daughters the best of luck with their Benz early experiences, your story reminded me of how MB got under my skin... Check my signature:thumbsup:
Have a great day!
