Hey guys,

Not a MB owner but really thinking about picking up an old 1987 190D non-turbo.

Here's the guys ad description

got a 1987 Mercedes 190d for sale.
I was offering it earlier for $3200 however the transmission just got an 1800$ complete overhaul job therefore I had to raise the price to 3800 FIRM

5cyl 2.5L non-turbo bulletproof diesel engine with 275K kms on it (if you do some research you will find that these engines last for way over 500k)
4 speed automatic transmission (just overhauled)
Rock solid body (all older mercedes were made with galvanized steel)........YOU WILL NOT FIND A SPOT OF RUST ON IT
Dark red leather interior in perfect shape.
power windows, mirrors, locks etc.
Cd player
Brand new MVI
rotors and pads were changed on all 4 wheels a month ago
14" alloy wheels with winter tires

Car starts without a problem at -10 C even without block heater being plugged in.

CAR GETS over 40 MPG (~ 6L/100km) IN THE CITY
and if that's not enough it can be easily converted to burn WVO (waste vegetable oil)

NO TRADES, PRICE IS FIRM

pictures have been taken on the day the ad was posted

Pic can be seen here

So I don't really believe his 40MPG claim... yes I'm sure you can get that sometimes however I think the car is listed as 30/34 mpg city/hwy

I drive around 400kms a week and a diesel like this would be nice as it would be a good ride and not too cramped as I'm not a short man!

I'm not afraid of mechanical work as I own and off-road Jeeps but I'm just curious about the typical things I should look for on this 190D

I heard that the power items sometimes fail like windows, locks etc.

Any comments would be good! My alternative would likely be a VW diesel in the mid-90's which is less cool than this Baby-benz

Hi Kristian,

I owned a 1984 190D 2.2 5 speed in 1990. I agree that the car you are looking at won't get 40MPG. Mine got about 30 on the road and 22-24 around town.

The good:

It has a trailer hitch which comes in handy for towing light weight trailers (mine also had one). The 2.5 will give you more power. The overall condition looks pretty good.

The bad:

There are 2 trim pieces missing below the front headlamp assemblies. The 2.5 emblem is missing on right rear of trunk lid. The car has the wrong style rims.

Good luck,

Dave

Dave,

Yes I noticed the missing trim under the headlights! Good eye catching that too !

Emblem I noticed as well. Kinda sucks but not a show stopper!

Wrong style rims is something I wouldn't have known at all thanks! Maybe he has them stashed somewhere ;)

I do like the hitch... apparently the 2.5 can haul 600ish KG un-braked and 1300KG Braked. That's good it'll let me haul around my utilty trailer and even my light camper trailer.

Used to use my Jeep to haul them and it was only rated for 1100 KG, short wheelbase and all!

Anyone know if the exhaust on this model would be stainless? Living in eastern canada we get a lot of road salt and a SS exhaust would last much longer!

something to add

hi
I've been driving and maintaining a 190d for about 3 years now
it's a 2.2 liter 4 cylinder one - I run biodiesel
with the air conditioning off I get about 40 mpg average
but I don't sit in traffic much

things to consider
1- get a compression check - or at least a blow back test
how long the aluminum block diesels last has alot to do with
how they were treated - or mistreated - rather than miles
2- plan on putting in new injectors (DIY 250$ if you're handy)
3- plan on getting the tranny serviced flushed -(if you don't think that's
necessary - why do you think they had to rebuild it? - I'd spend $150 on
a flush and service to make sure it's spotlessly clean - and keep it that way
4- replace the filter in the power steering pump - they get forgotten by many folks

they take alot of maintenance - but if you're up for it
they're wonderful vehicles

best regards

COme to NS... we just had a very cold day at -15 C.

The diesel sold at the pumps in Canada is rated for a lower temp. How else would those long hauls keep driving!!!!

Regardless I did look at her today and found the following issues:
Trim missing (Saw in the pics)
Front bumper cracked
Front bumper zip tied on one corner
Dent in rear end above pass. tail light
driver's side mirror adjuster broken
Climate control does not work and is not coverted to R-134a
Sunroof does not work
Rear windows do not work
Two hub caps were in rough shape

It did start well in sub 0 Deg Cel temp, and the tranny shifted smoothly and quickly. Shifting into reverse was almost instant.

Talked him down to $3300 but that's still a crapload of little things to fix. Stuff I can do myself but I'm not looking for a project car for a DD!

If he budges more on the price I might take a second look

its too expensive, dont buy it. you will end up spending $3k easy on repairs.

Check if the car vibrates at low revs (sign of worn engine mounts, usually happens at this age)
Check for squeaky sounds (belt tensioner gets worn)
Check the condition of the tyres,
Do a compression test on the engine
Check the brake master cylinder, see if it holds pressure.
Check the gasket
Check the ABS
Check the ball joints..
Man the list goes on and on.... Take it to a Benz specialist, he'll charge you $150 for a full inspection, its definitely worth it.

I paid $3500 for a mint 1993 190E 8v.

he's right

I have to agree - spend a few dollars now for an inspection
(and then keep shopping)
if you knew how many things I've had to do to my 190d . . .
you wouldn't believe me - but once you learn them
they're fun to work on (but it's a "hobby car" and I like working on things)
