simple as simple - can somebody give me the location of these three things on the 97 e420 -

1 - the fuel pump (is it in the tank or not?)
2 - a/the fuel pump fuse
3 - the fuel pump relay

same situation - good battery, car spins and spins but does not start, if I add gas directly, car fires and runs, so I know it's a fueling issue, but simply cannot find the fuel pump fuse or the fabled fuel pump relay -

I can't help you as to 3, but the fuse is one of the ones under the back seat if I'm not mistaken, you should have a chart of fuses under there next to the fuse panel. The fuel pump itself is right next to the fuel filter, both are behind an access panel you can find just ahead of the rear axle on the driver's side of the car. There is a great DIY in the stickies for the filter, the pump is literally right next to it (and NOT in the tank).

I Would look at the Crank Position Sensor..as That is where the signal starts from..
also its a known problem for a NO start

I also have your same year of car '97 E420 sport model with 197k miles on it. After repairing the ignition coil issue, and other issues I repaired. Now, I have a long start issue after the car is shut off and cooled down a bit 5-8 second key on before it starts up. I was going in the direction of dripping injectors or fuel pump relay starting to fail. Here is the bad news from what I have found out, Is that our '97 has a relay module and has several relays and fuses in an ECU style case near the main ECU in the engine compartment passenger side From my schematics it has the air pump, and engine/powertrain relay and fuel pump relay and fuses in this module. It should be the first module towards the front of the vehicle in the enclosure of the ECU. try unplugging the conn. a few times to clean them a bit, ecu connectors too, high mileage cars get loose terminals more than not, that will set codes and you will spend your money up and down and have the codes come right back. I will debug the fuel pump issue when I get a chance too, I have too many other cars to fix this week. I am a newbie to benz cars, have been and still a bimmer owner '76 2002 Ti (not Tii) and '94 5 series with 245k mi. This forum has already saved me time in searching for related issues on my car and I will give back what I can as often as I can.

i need to know where the fuel pump in my 95 e420 is located as well as how to diy myself! i have been waiting patiently for months for my boyfriend or many of his friends that "say they will do it" just want to be able to do it myself :grin

Did you test fuel pressure? If you see '0' psi pressure, your car may need the pump( need more to dig in problem) but I hate to replace any parts without test or knowing. I know you guy have lot of $$$. I just want to know what's course for your(my) problem. Good luck. 00320

On the 97 E420's the fuel pump is located next to the fuel filter. under the car on the passenger side is a black plastic shield. drop the shield and you will see the fuel filter, accumulator and fuel pump.

i have not checked the fuel pressure yet! not sure how too Lol! what happen was the wiring harness had to be replaced, like most from '91-'96 because of the biodegradable wire insulation mercedes used for those years, well they disintegrated and wires were touching and my car eventually wouldn't start! got the wiring harness replaced like i said and my car still won't start! my boyfriend (who doesn't have a lot of $$$) got a new fuel pump and told me he was going to put it in, this has been a while now, its been sitting for about 3 months and i happen to know that is not good for it either!! i love my car she is my baby and i just want her up, running and back on the road!!
i figure the only way to do that is learn myself and fix her up
i DONT want to have to ask him or his friends for help, like where is the fuel pump located, etc....so i figured i would ask y'all
