Can anybody tell me where to find the OB2 port on my 1996 Sl500, according to the manual it is located on the firewall , but either I'm blind or it doesn't exsist. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

On a 1996 North American model the OBD2 port should be located just above the drivers right foot inside the passenger compartment. The port has a little cover that snaps open to access it with the OBD2 scan tool.

The 32 pin diagnostic connector is located on the right side of the firewall in the engine compartment.

For OBDII or the 38 pin? For the former anything works well. The latter comes in two choices - exorbitantly expensive that works and moderately expensive that works barely with a high level of nuisance, probably better to go to a shop as necessary. There are long threads here on the Chinese clones but they are painful to read.

ODB2 will likely clear your check engine light. You can buy a scanner or a bluetooth dongle to read and reset codes. I like the latter option (android specific for the app, but I'm sure iphone supports also). Not only can you see and clear codes, you can see real time data.

I bought a wi-fi OBD-ii that connects to my iPhone a few years back. Works great on most everything except my '96 SL. It takes forever to synch, gives weird codes that change if you start, stop, and restart the car, and sometimes it cleared the codes but sometimes didn't. So, if you get those responses, you're not alone.

And all that said, I suppose I'll try to hook it to my aunt's '97 this weekend just to see if it behaves differently.
